The previous owner of the residence featured in the film Home Alone was discovered deceased at an Illinois nature preserve this week, just days after facing child pornography charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Lake County Coroner’s Office indicated the cause of death appeared to be self-inflicted asphyxia. Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the death.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“This is believed to be an isolated incident with no threat to the community at this time,” the Lake County Coroner’s Office stated. Earlier this month, Abendshien had been charged with seven felony counts related to child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The development comes as Home Alone viewers recently discovered new details about one of the film’s scenes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Authorities claimed they had received multiple tips indicating an online account associated with him was being used to possess, create, or distribute such material.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Law enforcement searched his residence on April 16 and confiscated electronic evidence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He subsequently attended a detention hearing the next day and was released under specific conditions, reports the Mirror US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Abendshien was the owner of the red-brick residence in Winnetka, Illinois, that is widely recognized as the McCallister family home in the 1990 Christmas film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Most notably, Abendshien resided in the house during the filming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He subsequently authored a memoir about the experience called Home but Alone No More.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“We had a large master bedroom suite that we converted into an apartment,” he revealed in a prior interview. “As long as we kept out of the camera eye, we were free to roam and watch scenes as they were being filmed.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The five-bedroom property was sold by his family in 2012 for $1.585 million. Since then, the home has changed hands at least twice, most recently fetching $5.5 million in January 2025. The new owners are now undertaking efforts to restore the residence to its on-screen appearance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Our vision is to bring back the warmth and just the love from the movie,” Scott Price, the project manager overseeing the renovation, told NBC. “There [were] so many great colors, and it just made you feel like family and like home, and we want to bring that magic back.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Director Chris Columbus shed light on why the property was selected for the beloved film back in 2015. “We needed to cast a house that would work for the stunts and also a house that was visually appealing and, if this makes sense, warm and menacing at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“It’s the kind of house that if you were a kid, it would be fun to be left home alone,” he further remarked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
