HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT<\/a>) \u2013 The Saenger Theater in Hattiesburg<\/a> continues to bring a wide range of entertainment to the Pine Belt. The venue has served the community since 1929.<\/p>\n

It first opened with silent films and six-cent tickets. Today, it hosts concerts, comedy shows, theater productions and family events. Director Todd Goode said the variety is intentional.<\/p>\n

Great Forrest County Fair extended through Sunday <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a centerpiece of the community of Hattiesburg, as far as entertainment,\u201d said Goode. \u201cTo have gone from originally silent movies and just at the beginning of talkies to now, we do comedy, we do family shows, we do theater, we do concerts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The theater\u2019s history remains a priority. A renovation in 2003 restored many original features. Visitors can still see vintage tile, chandeliers and the original stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe even have some tile that is from the original theater here, and you can see that they used the same color scheme; quite a bit of original elements still in the center as well, too, like the bare bulb lighting outside or the chandelier in the auditorium. Even the stage is original,\u201d said Goode.<\/p>\n

As it nears 100 years, the Saenger Theater continues to serve the community. Leaders said it remains a place to relax and enjoy live entertainment close to home.<\/p>\n

Events are scheduled through the end of the year.<\/p>\n
