Prince Harry has said he will always be a member of the Royal
\nFamily in an interview that has raised big questions.<\/p>\n
During a surprise two day visit to Ukraine, the Duke of Sussex
\ntold ITV News that he will always be a member of the family and
\nthat he was doing the work he was \u201dborn to do\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, it came during a private trip, rather than an official
\none even though the event appeared to have many of the aspects of
\nthe kind of visit Harry might have expected to make while a working
\nmember of the Royal Family. And that\u2019s led to questions.<\/p>\n
While there\u2019s no doubt that Harry remains part of the family, in
\nthe sense that he is the son of the current Monarch and the brother
\nof the future King, he very famously stepped back as a working
\nmember of the royals, along with his wife, Meghan.<\/p>\n
In 2020, the couple announced they wanted to make a new life for
\nthemselves as half in\/half out royals. They said they wanted to
\ncontinue to represent the Monarchy at some events, such as Trooping
\nthe Colour, but to also have the ability to pursue business
\ninterests. This was flatly rejected by Queen Elizabeth II. Harry
\nand Meghan are no longer permitted to use their HRHs and they don\u2019t
\ncarry out royal engagements of any kind. In the past five years,
\nthey have set up businesses, including the Duchess of Sussex\u2019s As
\nEver range, and made TV programmes on a range of topics including
\ntheir lives behind palace walls.<\/p>\n
However, their recent actions and Harry\u2019s latest interview have
\nraised questions.<\/p>\n
The duke\u2019s statement that he remains a part of the Royal Family
\nhas been interpreted in some quarters as going further than saying
\nhe is related to King Charles. Some have interpreted it as a claim
\nthat his current activities are part of the royal set up.<\/p>\n
The controversy has been heightened by a recent visit made by
\nHarry and Meghan to Australia. The trip, effectively by two private
\ncitizens, saw them visit a children\u2019s hospital as well as meet some
\nof those affected by the Bondi Beach attack. However, it also
\nincluded business echoes such as the Duchess of Sussex launching an
\nonline link to buy clothes she had worn during the visit. It was
\nseen as an attempt, by some, to cash in on royal links and in
\ncontradiction to the \u2018Sandringham Summit\u2019 which put paid to the
\n\u2018half in\/ half out\u2019 model presented by the Sussexes.<\/p>\n
The latest interview and visits aren\u2019t truly \u2018half in\/ half out\u2019
\nas Harry and Meghan aren\u2019t working royals. Whatever the optics of
\nany visit, they ultimately remain private citizens. However, they
\nare famous private citizens. During his time in Ukraine, Harry made
\ncalls for the US to increase its support for the country, comments
\nwhich led to President Trump claiming that he spoke more for the UK
\nthan Harry did.<\/p>\n
The Duke of Sussex will be aware that The King is about to make
\na crucial State Visit to the US. His comments created a situation
\nthat wasn\u2019t authorised by the Royal Family and certainly wasn\u2019t
\nadvertised to them in advance. And this is where Harry\u2019s latest
\nclaims really become controversial. Harry could be seen as acting
\nfor the Firm without letting the Firm know what, where or how he\u2019s
\nacting for them. And no Firm, royal or not, can tolerate that.<\/p>\n
The issue with the model of half in\/ half out as it was mooted
\nwas that it was always on Harry and Meghan\u2019s terms. There was never
\na quid pro quo of what they would do. Their support for the royals
\nwas always within the sphere of how it would benefit team Sussex,
\nnot the bigger overall team. And that remains an issue now. Yes,
\nHarry will always be the son of Charles III, the brother of a
\nfuture king called William. But the concept of the Royal Family is
\nmuch bigger than kith and kin. Harry knows as well as the next
\nperson that it implies a role within an institution. And the model
\nhe proposes for that role still appears to be purely about his
\nplans. No wonder Buckingham Palace hasn\u2019t said a word.<\/p>\n
