They have recorded eight albums, composed more than 100 original songs, reached No. 1 on folk radio charts, won major songwriting contests, and toured nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably more famous beyond their hometown, they are about to connect with a new audience.<\/p>\n<p>True North will be the special guests of Salem Pops Orchestra for its final concert of the season at 3 p.m. May 10 at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsalemcommunitycenter.com\/copy-of-event-information\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.eastsalemcommunitycenter.com\/copy-of-event-information\">East Salem Community Center<\/a>, 1850 45th Ave. NE.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>For Grainger, it will check an item off her bucket list.<\/p>\n<p>She has admired other artists who have performed with orchestras, thinking what a great opportunity it would be, but doubting she was popular enough.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cEspecially when you realize that they take your original songs and arrange them for an orchestra,\u201d Grainger said. \u201cIt&#8217;s just mind-blowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Wetzel studied classical music in college before starting to play folk and bluegrass, meeting Grainger when their bands were booked at the same venue on the same night, falling in love, and eventually launching True North.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of ties it back in a way I hadn&#8217;t expected,\u201d Wetzel said. \u201cTo me, it is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"89732290007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Bridging the gap between classical and popular music<\/h2>\n<p>Symphony orchestras collaborating with musicians from other genres has long been a trend.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Orchestras aim to attract broader audiences and modernize the image of classical music. Rock, pop, folk and other artists look to expand their sound across genres and styles.<\/p>\n<p>Modern examples, to name just a few, include the Indigo Girls, Metallica and Sting, who have all performed multiple times with symphony orchestras around the country.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salempopsorchestra.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.salempopsorchestra.org\/\">Salem Pops<\/a> is a 40-member, all-volunteer community orchestra. He used music notation software to help assign which instruments play which parts in each song.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve written some really beautiful music,\u201d Harrington said. \u201cI love their style. Dan and Kristen have a sound a lot like the Carpenters, who I\u2019m very fond of, so it was easy for me to get involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has created orchestral arrangements for a variety of Salem Pops guest performers, from an Irish fiddler and a saw musician to The Severin Sisters, another local bluegrass duo.<\/p>\n<p>The True North songs Harrington arranged were \u201cExtraordinary Grace\u201d and \u201cKeep The River On Your Right,\u201d the latter which earned Grainger first place in the folk category of the 2020 USA Songwriting Contest.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>He lightly scored both songs, careful not to overpower Grainger and Wetzel. They spent about 45 minutes running through each song at least twice, pausing only a couple of times to discuss possible adjustments.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI could tell it was going to come together pretty quickly; everyone came prepared,\u201d said Garrett, who arranged \u201cDon\u2019t Take Me Back\u201d and \u201cStop Me If I Told You This Before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The experience was new for Grainger and Wetzel, having to sing and play while also paying attention to a conductor. Wetzel reads music, while Grainger plays predominantly by ear.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cIt was crazy different,\u201d she said. \u201cTalk about getting out of my comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their fans may notice something different about the duo the day of the concert.<\/p>\n<p>Orchestra members traditionally wear black attire, ensuring a uniform appearance that avoids distracting from the music<em>.<\/em> Grainger and Wetzel haven\u2019t been asked to dress up and wear black, but that\u2019s their plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re used to wearing jeans and boots,\u201d she said, \u201cso this ought to be something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salem Pops offers its special guests a modest stipend, but the experience is priceless for True North. They consider it a privilege to share the same stage and plan to savor every magical moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s this certain thing that happens to the back of your neck when all of a sudden that big string section enters a song,\u201d Wetzel said, \u201cand that\u2019s going to be happening on Kristen&#8217;s songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salempopsorchestra.org\/event-details\/salem-pops-with-special-guest-true-north\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.salempopsorchestra.org\/event-details\/salem-pops-with-special-guest-true-north\">Concert tickets are available online<\/a> or at the door. Cost is $20 for general admission, $10 for students, and free for children 6 and under.
