{"id":2389074,"date":"2026-04-25T17:25:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T17:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2389074"},"modified":"2026-04-25T17:25:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T17:25:21","slug":"dermot-bannons-new-tv-show-meant-he-had-to-learn-how-to-listen-for-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/dermot-bannons-new-tv-show-meant-he-had-to-learn-how-to-listen-for-the-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Dermot Bannon&#8217;s new TV show meant he &#8216;had to learn how to listen for the first time&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<h2 class=\"LeadText_lead-text__wd_PA __className_d3c6d4\" data-testid=\"leadtext\">The celebrity architect and TV presenter Dermot Bannon is back on our screens for a new interiors series, but it&#8217;s very different from Room To Improve<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-embed__0T8WX ImageEmbed_image-lead__Ti3qQ\" data-testid=\"leadimage\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"37044416\">\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-container__2AIQm\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dermot Bannon\" loading=\"eager\" sizes=\"(max-width: 508px) 508px, (max-width: 615px) 615px, 1200px\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.rsvplive.ie\/article37044416.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s1200f\/0_Star-Chic-2.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.rsvplive.ie\/article37044416.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s508\/0_Star-Chic-2.jpg 508w, https:\/\/i2-prod.rsvplive.ie\/article37044416.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615\/0_Star-Chic-2.jpg 615w, https:\/\/i2-prod.rsvplive.ie\/article37044416.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s1200f\/0_Star-Chic-2.jpg 1200w\"\/><\/div>\n<p aria-label=\"Dermot Bannon\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Dermot Bannon(Image: Evan Doherty)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rsvplive.ie\/news\/celebs\/dermot-bannon-prioritising-health-career-36805583\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Television presenter Dermot Bannon<\/a> has admitted that his new show Celebrity Super Spaces pushed him outside of his \u201ccomfort zone\u201d as he \u201chad to learn how to listen for the first time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The new series, which lands on RTE One tomorrow night (Sunday, April 26), <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rsvplive.ie\/news\/celebs\/dermot-bannon-gives-honest-opinion-37038604\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">sees Dermot step inside the homes of well-known celebrities<\/a> including podcaster and TV star <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rsvplive.ie\/all-about\/vogue-williams\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Vogue Williams<\/a>, comedian Joanne McNally, actor Aidan Gillen, chef Clodagh McKenna and rugby star Andrew Porter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But despite being on our TV screens for nearly two decades now as the host of fan favourite Room To Improve as well as Super Spaces and Incredible Homes, Dermot says this show \u201cis better\u201d because he has people \u201cto bounce off\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He told Chic , \u201cI think (this show) is better, and the reason I think it&#8217;s better is for one reason only \u2013 normally when I do Super Spaces I&#8217;m walking around a place by myself or I&#8217;m chatting to the audience going, \u2018oh my god, look at this, this is cool\u2019, which I love doing, but it was really nice to have someone to bounce off in this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThese programmes are about the people as much as it is about their homes whereas before it was very much just about the home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIn this, it\u2019s, you\u2019ve designed something different, why?, and I get them to explain it. And all the spaces are unusual. All these celebrities have something quirky or unusual that kind of define who they are so it was really interesting just to have them to bounce off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cFor example, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rsvplive.ie\/news\/celebs\/ireland-rugbys-andrew-porter-wife-35287292\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Andrew Porter<\/a>, the biggest surprise for him, as a young rugby player \u2013 international rugby player, all the money in the world \u2013 is his favourite space in his house is a workshop. He built a workshop that is good for his mental health. He lost his mum when he was young and he finds the pressure of rugby sometimes gets to him so he has this workshop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSo it\u2019s about discovering things about celebrities that you wouldn\u2019t have known before through their houses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cCamille O\u2019Sullivan and Aidan Gillen, the house is really super cool but different, some would call it odd, I call it refreshing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cMaybe that\u2019s a theme that runs through a lot of these houses \u2013 a lot of us follow trends or do things that we see on Instagram or might see in Image magazine \u2013 but celebs aren\u2019t afraid to do their own thing because a lot of them are creative, a lot of them are artists in their own field, so they weren\u2019t afraid to be experimental. Whether it worked, that\u2019s another thing. That\u2019s where I offered my opinion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBut in most cases their house was an extension of who they are, especially with someone like Joanne McNally. The house is as bonkers as she is \u2013 in a really, really good way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cShe has an air fryer&#8230; but she keeps her keys in it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI never really knew Joanne but I fell in love with her instantly. I just loved her and the vibrancy and personality of her house was just amazing. I get why everyone wants to go see her, she&#8217;s that good!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">As an architect, Dermot is no stranger to giving his professional advice when it comes to home renovations and interiors and on Room To Improve he sometimes clashes with families who don\u2019t always agree with his advice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In Celebrity Super Spaces, he says he had to park his judgments to one side to really get to know the stars and the reasoning behind their decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s things that I found unusual and didn\u2019t like and I did say it but there\u2019s ways of saying it \u2013 like, \u2018I wouldn\u2019t make that decisions but I get why you did it\u2019. So I didn\u2019t shirk away from it but the job here was to understand them through their house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSo while it\u2019s hard not to be judgmental, the job was to find out why they did things. And if you overlay that with too much judgment, you miss the point. So you have to park the judgment \u2013 and I\u2019m not great doing that so it was probably written all over my face \u2013 but I was trying to become a different type of presenter where I had to listen for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIn Room To Improve, I do a lot of the talking so in this I had to learn how to listen and get them and understand them through their house and I loved doing that but it pushed me outside of my comfort zone a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Vogue Williams and her husband Spencer Matthews own a beautiful home in Howth in Dublin but the couple also recently bought a new home in London which they are currently renovating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">So did they ask Dermot for his advice?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201c(Vogue) didn\u2019t&#8230; but Spencer did. So I gave them advice on their bathroom \u2013 they\u2019ve a huge bathroom at the front of their house. So he asked me about the bedroom and bathroom situation upstairs and I helped them out with that but they will probably do their own thing anyway!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWhen I get into queues in IKEA or Woodie\u2019s or somewhere like that, or if you\u2019re buying furniture, I\u2019d get a lot of people following me around, going, well which couch does he like, follow him, follow him, especially when filming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThen we\u2019ll leave that area of the shop and you\u2019ll see them go up and test the couch!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cOr I\u2019d get people stopping me and asking, \u2018look, we\u2019ve a room this size, what do you think?\u2019, and off the top of my head, I\u2019ll tell them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cBut most of the time people just want me to tell them what they did is good. And sometimes, if they\u2019ve finished the project and it\u2019s all done and they\u2019re happy but I can see a mistake, I don\u2019t tell them because there\u2019s no point. They\u2019re really proud of it and I get that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">As for his favourite home that he visited during filming for the new show, Dermot adds, \u201cThey were all really different and I know that sounds really diplomatic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI really enjoyed Camille and Aidan\u2019s house because Camille is an architect as well as a singer so it\u2019s really architectural but really quirky at the same time. There\u2019s a really cool room in the middle of the house that there\u2019s no furniture in whatsoever, it\u2019s just for what you want it to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSo you can sit on the floor. I went in and she said, \u2018what do you want to do?\u2019 and I said, \u2018I dunno, I kind of feel like I want to go to the window\u2019 and she said, \u2018well go to the window\u2019. You know, it was odd but it was challenging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWith say Don Mescall\u2019s house, his house is full of triggers for songwriting so there\u2019s objects around the house that he would go and look at and it would trigger him and help him with songs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAll stuff that was really unusual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cClodagh McKenna\u2019s house has this amazing wisteria dining room, it\u2019s like something from Harry Potter, so there\u2019s loads of interesting stuff that I would never have designed or done before or even thought of and that was what was really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">We\u2019re in the middle of a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rsvplive.ie\/all-about\/cost-of-living\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">cost of living<\/a> crisis which shows no signs of abating, with house prices and the cost of building materials rising significantly over the last number of years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When Chic chatted to Dermot he was at a conference and was asked by an attendee if they should go ahead with a house build.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He told us, \u201cSomeone asked me if they should go ahead with the build and I said, \u2018look, to be honest, the only way prices are going to come down significantly is if there is a massive recession\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe only time I really saw prices adjusting downwards was after the big crash in 2008 \u2013 and nobody wants that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSo sometimes what happens is building prices might slow down or they might level, they never really go down, and with that, inflation goes with it so I think if you can afford it, just do it now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if things are going to get any worse because it\u2019s all up in the air \u2013 we have someone in America who is dictating how the whole world is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAnd I don\u2019t know if we have felt the effects at all in the market with regards to what\u2019s happening \u2013 and hopefully we won\u2019t \u2013 but this is a world economics thing and I suppose I\u2019m not an expert on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Dermot has three children \u2013 the oldest of whom is 21 \u2013 who he hopes will all go on to own their own homes one day. But, as a parent, he says he is very aware that this may not be possible for a whole generation of young adults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe get a lot of it in Room To Improve, especially this year, a lot of parents in their late 40s\/early 50s, they\u2019ve got teenage kids or kids in their 20s and they say, \u2018they\u2019ll be living with us for ages so we have to make sure that we can have four adults or five adults in this house\u2019 and there\u2019s a real sense out there that there won\u2019t be anywhere for them to live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAnd with my own kids I\u2019m trying not to think of it because they have to try and make their own way in the world and do what they do but I do worry. But it is what it is so there\u2019s no point worrying about it, it won\u2019t change anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI think we just adapt to situations but my daughter will be looking for a house in four or five years \u2013 she\u2019s in third year in college at the moment, on an Erasmus in Sydney \u2013 but it\u2019s something that is there, what is she going to do? What are the younger generation going to do? How will they ever afford a home? How will they even afford to rent a home and move out of home?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s something that does bother me. It\u2019s not that I want them out from under me, at all, I really enjoy having my kids here, but it\u2019s for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rsvplive.ie\/all-about\/dermot-bannon\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Dermot<\/a> is excited for Celebrity Super Spaces to air, there is another project he would love to work on in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cDublin city has a lot of architectural issues with regards to how the city is and how desirable the city is and I think other cities, for lots of different reasons&#8230; they do things a lot better than we do and I would love to explore that and kind of bring lessons back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cRoom To Improve does it for the house, I\u2019d love to do it for a city and maybe learn a little bit from that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe have a small population, we have lots of land so it wouldn\u2019t be hard to get Dublin and Cork and Galway working right so I\u2019d love to do something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Dermot Bannon\u2019s Celebrity Super Spaces airs tomorrow, April 26, at 9.30pm on RTE One and RTE Player.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Want to<\/strong> <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"see more of the stories you love from RSVPLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=rsvplive.ie\" rel=\"nofollow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">see more of the stories you love from RSVP<\/a> <\/strong><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">?
