R.E.M’s Michael Stipe performed a new solo track, ‘The Rest Of Ever’<\/em> while appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The track is from the singer’s upcoming album, The Times<\/em>, which he has been reportedly working on for several years, and will be released at some stage this year, which he said: \u00a0\u201cOne of the songs is the sound of a tree hearing itself for the first time,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s this confusing situation. My friend recorded a tree in my backyard in Georgia and played it back to itself, and so it sounds like\u00a0Daft Punk, but I\u2019m putting a sea shanty [in the song]”.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Stipe performed this track as he appeared alongside the house band, Louis Cato and the Great Big Joy Machine.<\/p>\n

The singer was also asked by Colbert which sea shanty it was, to which he replied: \u201cIt\u2019s the most familiar that everyone knows,\u201d before breaking into \u2018Drunken Sailor\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe tree has not responded yet,\u201d<\/em> Stipe added. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna let his people get back to my people and see what happens”.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

On the album’s initial delay in March, Stipe previously explained:<\/a> \u201cCovid didn\u2019t help, but I\u2019m finishing it. When the band split, I just needed a break. I took five years but I got pulled back into music. It\u2019s been a struggle. That\u2019s the main thing. I want it to be great, but I\u2019ve got the pressure of having been in R.E.M. and it\u2019s a high bar, because I want this to be as good as that, and that\u2019s near impossible”.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s f****** exciting but also terrifying, and I\u2019m doing the music for the first time too, and I think I\u2019m good at it but not great,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the singer added.\u00a0\u201cBut I love my voice. I don\u2019t like my speaking voice but I love my singing voice, and I so want to immerse myself back into offering music to the world”.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
