Publish a list of the 30 greatest living American songwriters. The Times <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/magazine\/greatest-american-songwriters-alive.html\" title=\"\">just did that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">First, we polled hundreds of pop stars, critics, historians, industry executives, D.J.s, music supervisors and choreographers. They gave us 700 names. (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/04\/27\/magazine\/critics-pick-greatest-american-songwriters.html\" title=\"\">Look at some of their ballots<\/a>.) Then, during long and often heated conversations, six Times music writers edged the list down to 30 artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">And now we need to talk about it! There\u2019s much to discuss. Because, sure, Bob Dylan\u2019s on the list, and Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen, too. But Billy Joel didn\u2019t make the cut. Nor did Garth Brooks or Randy Newman. Yes to Stevie Wonder. No to Stevie Nicks. Everyone\u2019s going to have feelings about this. Everyone\u2019s going to cheer for some, bark at others, harrumph in complaint or declare vindication. (I was bummed about Nicks, but the methodology\u2019s sound. Here\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/04\/27\/magazine\/greatest-living-songwriters-methodology.html\" title=\"\">how they did it<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">What I like most about the project is the language behind the critical reasoning, the way enthusiasm can transform into concrete, and convincing, argument.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Take the river of hits Lionel Richie produced from the late 1970s into the mid-80s: \u201cHis litany of urgently treacly smashes was the soundtrack of that era,\u201d writes Jon Caramanica.
