The first royal to really be linked to The Carlyle was Princess Diana<\/a>. While it\u2019s entirely possible that Charles stayed there during his trips to New York in the \u201980s and \u201990s, it was the paparazzi-plagued princess who first got photographed outside the hotel in December 1995. She was in town to accept United Cerebral Palsy\u2019s humanitarian award at its black-tie gala. But a few weeks earlier, she\u2019d given an explosive interview in which she\u2019d revealed to BBC reporter Martin Bashir the extent of Charles\u2019s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. Because one of the guys that operates the elevator said to me, \u2018You know, we once had Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, and Steve Jobs all at the same time.\u2019 Now, that<\/em> is a power elevator,\u201d Morgan shared in the documentary. \u201cIt was completely silent until Diana began singing \u2018Beat It.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Diana returned in December 1996 for the Costume Institute Benefit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and again in June 1997, for a Christie\u2019s auction of her dresses, which, per a Daily News<\/em> report, raised $5.8 million for charity.
