BRATTLEBORO \u2014 Costa Rican artist Deirdre Hyde, whose work is currently on view at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC), will lead a hands-on artmaking workshop, \u201cRepurposing Fragments in Collage and Appliqu\u00e9,\u201d on Saturday, May 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Brattleboro\u2019s River Gallery School. Admission is $45 ($35 for BMAC members). Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Rather than emphasizing formal technique, the workshop will focus on working with reclaimed and meaningful materials, including pieces of past projects, personal mementos, and vintage textiles. Participants will experiment with fabric, stitching, and layered composition to create new forms shaped by memory, curiosity, and play.<\/p>\n \u201cCollage and appliqu\u00e9 offer a way to reimagine what we already have,\u201d Hyde said in a news release. \u201cFragments carry stories, and when we bring them together in new ways, those stories can shift, expand, or take on entirely new meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n Some materials will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own fabric scraps, previous artworks, photographs, or other textiles to incorporate into their compositions. The workshop is open to ages 16 and up.<\/p>\n Hyde\u2019s BMAC exhibition, \u201cFragments of a Tropical Life,\u201d draws on four decades of sketches, woodcuts, screen prints, and lithographs the artist has created at her home in Costa Rica and then transformed into layered compositions. The resulting pieces evoke dense tropical ecosystems while reflecting intertwined personal and historical narratives of life, survival, and renewal.<\/p>\n BMAC Director of Exhibitions Sarah Freeman first encountered Hyde\u2019s work through the museum\u2019s annual ARTravel Costa Rica program. \u201cIt was exciting to see how Deirdre began experimenting with stitching and embroidery, and how over the years she developed energy, looseness, and inventiveness in repurposing her earlier work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cFragments of a Tropical Life\u201d is on view at BMAC through July 5.
