The search for meaning in one\u2019s life and how that quest can lead to satisfaction was laid out with sensitivity and a generous dose of humor in the Sisbarro Acting Studio\u2019s recent production of \u201cGet Your Kicks Off Route 66.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A<\/span>\u00a0cast of students from the Marco Island Charter Middle School Theater Club<\/span>\u00a0was featured, along with\u00a0<\/span>youths from the Marco YMCA Afterschool Theater program. Gina Sisbarro, who directs the MICMS and YMCA programs, wrote the play especially for her students<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and also<\/span>\u00a0served as\u00a0<\/span>its<\/span>\u00a0director<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Set in 1955 in\u00a0<\/span>Prairie Pines,\u00a0<\/span>a sleepy\u00a0<\/span>little\u00a0<\/span>town<\/span>\u00a0in the Arizona\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>esert,\u00a0<\/span>located<\/span>\u00a0off Route 66, the\u00a0<\/span>legendary 2,400-mile\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>ighway\u00a0<\/span>famous for linking the\u00a0<\/span>Midwest to California<\/span>, the pl<\/span>ay<\/span>\u00a0centers on Honey Mae’s Diner<\/span>, its\u00a0<\/span>staff<\/span>\u00a0and regular customers.\u00a0<\/span>Satisfaction with their laidback lives is the norm, except for\u00a0<\/span>a waitress<\/span>\u00a0named Madge, who imagines there must be more to life.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Her\u00a0<\/span>curiosity is\u00a0<\/span>quenched<\/span>\u00a0when\u00a0<\/span>a strange woman\u00a0<\/span>enters<\/span>\u00a0the diner and ask<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0for a cup of coffee.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>What happens next turns\u00a0<\/span>the community<\/span>\u00a0upside down<\/span>, with everything<\/span>\u00a0from a missing Hollywood\u00a0<\/span>starlet<\/span>, Joan Bombshell,<\/span>\u00a0to vehicles\u00a0<\/span>being<\/span>\u00a0run off the road, including a school bus loaded with hot, thirsty children<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0to a detective snooping around the place.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sisbarro<\/span>\u2019s love of classic films<\/span>\u00a0drove her creativity in devising the plot.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c<\/span>I’m<\/span>\u00a0a real fan of the old movies<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and there was a movie with Paul Newman and Geraldine Page (1962\u2019s \u201cSweet Bird of Youth\u201d) where she was running away from Hollywood,\u201d she said<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThat movie was an inspiration. And I always liked little diner pieces because you just never know what goes on in a little local diner.\u00a0<\/span>It’s<\/span>\u00a0always good for conversation and fun. I just love old Hollywood, so the idea came from that movie, the Hollywood\u00a0<\/span>starlet<\/span>\u00a0running away.\u00a0<\/span>So<\/span>\u00a0we did our own version of it.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After a series of surprising twists and turns, and a measure of suspense and humorous occurrences, \u201cGet Your Kicks on Route 66\u201d concludes with\u00a0<\/span>a happy ending<\/span>\u00a0that sees everyone achieving the fulfillment they so desperately seek.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe entire cast liked the idea of one set and how everyone remained on the stage once they arrived in the restaurant<\/span>,\u201d said Sisbarro. \u201c<\/span>Even though you\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0have a line, you always must be present<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and the actors did a smashing\u00a0<\/span>job\u00a0<\/span>with sta<\/span>y<\/span>ing engaged<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0listening to the conversation<\/span>s<\/span>, eating their meals<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0or signaling for that second cup of coffee. It was interesting to watch our three\u00a0<\/span>waitresses<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Violet, Chloe Wallet<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>who played Madge<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and Adilyn Haza<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>who played Freida<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0work the diner<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0T<\/span>hey had to keep busy the entire time. The ladies gave a realistic feel to being\u00a0<\/span>a waitress<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
