It\u2019s not every day your husband and his pal drop hundreds of thousands of dollars on a decommissioned Staten Island ferryboat.<\/p>\n
But on one fateful day in 2022, Scarlett Johansson<\/a> received a text from husband Colin Jost<\/a> informing her that was exactly what had happened. Jost and Pete Davidson<\/a> had purchased the passenger vessel for $280,100, as the New York Times<\/a> previously reported. The 277-foot John F. Kennedy ferryboat, which once carried 3,000 passengers daily between Staten Island and Manhattan, was now owned by two \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d<\/a> icons.<\/p>\n On an upcoming episode of the \u201cSmartLess\u201d<\/a> podcast (airing May 4), which People<\/a> got an early listen of, Jost revealed the specific text message he sent to Johansson post-ferry purchase and her epic response.<\/p>\n The \u201cPop Culture Jeopardy!\u201d host<\/a> explained that after making the gargantuan purchase, he texted his wife: \u201c\u2018Guess what? We own a ferry now.\u2019\u201d Johansson\u2019s response wasn\u2019t exactly congratulatory. \u201cAnd she was like, \u2018We?\u2019\u201d Jost recalled.<\/p>\n As for what she said when he got home, that\u2019s unknown. But Jost explained on the episode that she wasn\u2019t completely caught off guard as he had \u201csoft-floated\u201d the idea past her before making the purchase. Still, she remained skeptical.<\/p>\n \u201cShe now obviously sees the value in it, but also I think she\u2019s like, \u2018It\u2019s now become something that is a defining thing for you guys and an interesting thing for you guys. So you should take it seriously and figure out the best version of it, because for better or worse, it\u2019s going to reflect on you,\u2019\u201d he said of Johansson\u2019s view. He then added: \u201cWe don\u2019t care because we\u2019re comedians.\u201d<\/p>\n During the episode, Jost further defended the purchase, explaining his \u201creal estate\u201d logic. \u201cIf you put that on a dock in Manhattan, you\u2019ve suddenly got basically a building on the waterfront,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n Though it should be noted that he didn\u2019t seem as pleased with the purchase two years ago when he told People<\/a>: \u201cIt is absolutely the dumbest and least thought-through purchase I\u2019ve ever made in my life,\u201d<\/p>\n Paul Italia, owner of The Stand comedy club, was also involved in the purchase, per the outlet. And the group reportedly envisioned transforming the vessel into a floating event space with restaurants, bars, and hotels. While those plans haven\u2019t exactly panned out, they have hosted several events on board, including a Tommy Hilfiger New York Fashion Week show in 2024. Jost shared on the podcast that he and Davidson have almost broken even on the investment because of the events hosted.<\/p>\n As for the future?
