Visit Boxx Gallery this month for an evocative solo exhibition by photographer John Kane.<\/p>\n
The exhibition, \u201cAround Here and Other Places,\u201d transcends mere documentation. Instead of simply capturing reality, his images find magic, weave narratives and spark introspection.<\/p>\n
By focusing on the quirky, the subtle and the unexpected, Kane invites viewers to see the world through his eyes. His lens redefines the traditional “sense of place.\u201d He offers a contemporary perspective on the complex intersection of humanity and the landscape.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n “Last Year\u2019s Orchard on Schenk Road\u201d by John Kane, archival pigment<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Kane became committed to photography in high school, where he was a photographer for the school yearbook. At that time he used a 4×5 view camera, and developed and printed in the darkroom. Now, he has his film processed by a lab, and all of his printing is digital. He likes to print on a large scale, and often uses Japanese papers with plant-based kozo, gampi and mitsumata coatings.<\/p>\n “For almost 40 years, my principal photographic subject has been the occupied or altered landscape, and the signs of time and history on the land. Conceptually, I look for the point where our values, history and mythology intersect with the geography, and try to make photographs as close as I can to that point. Irony, humor, and contradiction always attract me, and I pay close attention to color, shape and composition. I also try to remember that the subject of the picture has to tell the story, not I.”<\/p>\n For decades, Kane split his time between Issaquah and Tieton. He and his wife, Julie, became full-time Tieton residents in 2025. For this show he tried to narrow his focus to Tieton and the Northwest, with a few pictures farther afield.<\/p>\n Kane\u2019s work has been exhibited at the Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, OR; the Center for Fine Art Photography, Fort Collins, CO; Lightbox Gallery, Astoria, OR; BOXX Gallery, Tieton, WA, Larson Gallery, Yakima, WA, and Paper Hammer Gallery, Seattle, WA.<\/p>\n Visit \u201cAround Here and Other Places,\u201d photography by John Kane at Boxx Gallery in May.
