Kneecap is gearing up for the release of their latest album, Fenian<\/em><\/a>, on May 1, and in the meantime, dropped the final single. \u201cIrish Goodbye\u201d, featuring Kae Tempest, was written by M\u00f3gla\u00ed Bap (real name Naoise \u00d3 Caireall\u00e1in) and details the \u201cspecific kind of grief\u201d that comes after losing someone to suicide.<\/p>\n

In a post on the group\u2019s Instagram<\/a>, \u00d3 Caireall\u00e1in shared his experience with that particular kind of loss. In 2020, his mother died by suicide. Before her death, he wrote the song \u201cMAM\u201d, saying that the idea was \u201cIf I wrote it, she\u2019d hear it, and maybe she\u2019d feel her worth, because when you suffer from depression, you can\u2019t see your own value.\u201d <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, he said, she passed before the song was finished. But while he never intended to write another song about her passing, there was a surprising catalyst for \u201cIrish Goodbye\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone sent my brother a documentary about my Dad in the \u201990s, when he was president of [Irish-speaking cultural organization] Conradh na Gaeilge,\u201d the post began. \u00d3 Caireall\u00e1in explained that the documentary was filmed when he and his brother were young. But they weren\u2019t typically a home video kind of family, he said, mostly photos. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo it was the first time I saw my Ma in a video,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd she was happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00d3 Caireall\u00e1in\u2019s post on social media goes into profound detail about Kneecap\u2019s latest single. The point of the song, he said, was to serve as a reminder not to get lost in debilitating grief. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to remember the good moments\u201d after losing someone to suicide, he wrote. \u201cYou get caught up in the dark times.\u201d<\/p>\n
