Milne bought the first of them, a teddy bear, at <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/harrods\/\">Harrods<\/a>, the department store in London, as a present for his then one-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p>As a child, Christopher Robin \u2013 who himself inspired a character of the same name in the children\u2019s books \u2013 called him Edward Bear, but later changed the name.<\/p>\n<p>The bear\u2019s new \u2013 and now very famous \u2013 name was based on those of two other animals: Winnipeg (Winnie for short), a black bear at London Zoo, and Pooh, a swan in When We Were Very Young, an earlier book by Milne, first published in 1924.<\/p>\n<p>Brandreth, who is writing a biography of the Milne family, described how the toys ended up in New York in the Telegraph last year.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that Christopher Robin had come to resent the \u201cempty fame\u201d of being \u201cChristopher Robin\u201d, while Milne resented the way he had come to be seen purely as a children\u2019s author.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 1947, when Milne\u2019s American publisher, Dutton\u2019s, came up with the idea of sending all the toys on a promotional tour of the US, father and son both said blithely, \u2018Let them go,\u2019\u201d he wrote. \u201cThey never came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1980s, Brandreth tried to get Pooh and friends back to Britain and approached the New York Public Library about the possibility, only to be sharply rebuffed.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1990s, Gwyneth Dunwoody, the MP, also gave it a go.
