Ella Langley<\/a> wasn\u2019t a Stagecoach headliner this year \u2014 but she might as well have been.<\/p>\n Ahead of last week\u2019s country music festival, the singer had just pulled off quite the feat: dethroning Taylor Swift as the queen of modern country music<\/a> thanks to her No. 1 hit \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d having a weeks-long grip on the Billboard Hot 100. (Her album, Dandelion<\/em>, has also surpassed records set by Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>, marking one of the most explosive runs in recent country music history.)<\/p>\n But on the ground in Indio, her ascent felt less like industry momentum and more like consensus.<\/p>\n As I crisscrossed the festival grounds for Yahoo<\/a> and spoke to fans about their love of country music, her name came up again and again \u2014 from Gen Z-ers there for the first time to a 78-year-old dieharder named Candy, who had circled Langley\u2019s set as a must-see.<\/p>\n During that 50-minute performance on Friday, Langley sang hits like \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas,\u201d \u201cDandelion\u201d and \u201cI Can\u2019t Love You Anymore\u201d (minus the song\u2019s collaborator, Morgan Wallen). And in lieu of Riley Green accompanying her for their <\/em>chart-topper \u2014\u00a02024\u2019s \u201cYou Look Like You Love Me\u201d \u2014 podcaster Theo Von<\/a> made his way onto the stage.<\/p>\n The crowd stretched wide and loud, packed with fans from just about every demographic. \u201cWe were in the crowd singing every single word to every single song that Ella had. That speaks volumes right there,\u201d a young man named Jackson told me. He and his three friends all \u201c110%\u201d identify as Ella\u2019s Fellas<\/a> \u2014 the nickname that Langley-loving men<\/a> wear with pride.<\/p>\n Not surprisingly, Ella\u2019s Fellas thought she should have been tapped as a headliner (the honors instead went to Cody Johnson, Lainey Wilson and Post Malone). \u201cShe was way better than anyone else,\u201d said Jackson. One middle-aged woman chimed in: \u201cShe needed more time, and we needed more time from her.\u201d<\/p>\n On that, at least, there was agreement. But when it came to everything else \u2014 what country music sounds like, who belongs in it and where it\u2019s going \u2014 opinions felt far less settled or unified. Stagecoach, more than anything, made that divide visible in real time.<\/p>\n Morgan Wallen wasn\u2019t on the Stagecoach bill this year, and Riley Green\u2019s Saturday night performance got 86\u2019d thanks to a duststorm that left attendees squinting and reaching for their bandanas. But if mainstream country circa 2026 had a Mount Rushmore, they\u2019d be on it, judging by how often their names were brought up.<\/p>\n For some of the youngest fans I ran into, there\u2019s no question. \u201cMy daughter can sing pretty much every Morgan Wallen song,\u201d Anthony, 37, told me of 5-year-old Aleigha.
