The Georgia Music Collections at Akins Ford Arena have unveiled a newly refreshed exhibit rotation spotlighting iconic artists, fan culture, and communities that shaped the state\u2019s sound.<\/p>\n\n

The updated display made its debut in February and introduced new artifacts and storytelling elements that continue its celebration of Georgia\u2019s musical legacy.<\/p>\n

Curated by the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries, the exhibit features artists spanning genres from gospel and country to rock, punk and hip hop. New additions include a silver performance cape worn by Little Richard, a 1990s-era dress from country star Trisha Yearwood, and a suit and boots from Wayne Cochran.<\/p>\n

The rotation also expands its focus on music communities by highlighting Atlanta\u2019s Little Five Points scene with memorabilia connected to the Indigo Girls, Chris Robinson, and Kevin Kinney, alongside archival materials from R.E.M.<\/p>\n\n

The collection traces its roots to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, whose holdings were acquired by the University of Georgia in 2011 after the Macon museum closed<\/a>. After years of preservation and expansion, the materials were first displayed at Akins Ford Arena in early 2025 as part of a permanent public installation.<\/p>\n

The exhibit is housed throughout the concourses of Akins Ford Arena, which is located at 300 N. Thomas St. in downtown Athens. Viewing hours align with ticketed events at the venue, and there is no additional admission cost for attendees to view the exhibit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
