If a newspaper makes a mistake or leaves something out in a story, they print a correction as soon as they can. If something erroneous is posted on a website, etiquette requires an update or correction to be added to the original post.<\/p>\n
In science, if new data comes to light and a previously announced theory or conclusion has to change, that\u2019s fantastic. That\u2019s what science is. It\u2019s a constant pursuit of the truth, and if the facts don\u2019t support the theory, then the theory must be changed.<\/p>\n
And when you\u2019re making a list involving complicated data\u2014especially on a project which few (if any) people have attempted before\u2014it\u2019s incumbent upon the researcher to go back and fix any errors and omissions.<\/p>\n
This is known as an \u201cerratum,\u201d an error in printing or writing. Protocol requires that a list of corrected errors be appended to a book, a journal, or any published material. Again, we must go where the facts lead us.<\/p>\n
