Could a Tony be next?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>Bess Wohl\u2019s play \u201cLiberation\u201d took home the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/news\/2026-pulitzer-prize-announcement\" target=\"_blank\">2026 Pulitzer<\/a> for drama on Monday, in a win that could bode well for Tuesday\u2019s Tony Award nominations. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiberation\u201d is a memory play, in which a daughter attempts to understand her mother\u2019s past as a member of a female liberation group in 1970s Ohio. The main character, Lizzie, imagines her mother\u2019s experience when she formed a \u201cconscious raising group\u201d with her friends. The story is based partially on Wohl\u2019s experiences with her own mother, Lisa Cronin Wohl, who wrote for Ms. magazine. <\/p>\n<p>The play, directed by Whitney White, opened at the James Earl Jones Theatre on Broadway in October 2025 and ran until February 2026. The show is scheduled to open at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geffenplayhouse.org\/shows\/liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\">Geffen Playhouse<\/a> in January 2027. Times theater critic Charles McNulty called \u201cLiberation\u201d \u201cone of the best plays of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe personal is political, as the feminist rallying cry has it, and Wohl has taken pains never to lose sight of this insight when imagining the complexities of the lives of others,\u201d McNulty <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2025-12-08\/theater-characters-breaking-fourth-wall\">wrote<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>This is Wohl\u2019s first Pulitzer win. She also wrote \u201cAmerican Hero,\u201d \u201cSmall Mouth Sounds,\u201d \u201cContinuity, \u201cMake Believe\u201d and \u201cGrand Horizons,\u201d which premiered on Broadway in 2019. <\/p>\n<p>There is recent precedent for the play that wins the Pulitzer to also find itself in the running for a Tony.
