\u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d may be a fun trip down memory lane for longtime fans, but for the journalism world, its candid take on today\u2019s media landscape was a bit unsettling, to say the least.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Starring returning actors Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, the sequel centered on Runway Magazine\u2019s fight for survival after editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Streep) gets caught up in a major scandal. Andy Sachs (Hathaway), once her assistant and now a successful (and recently laid-off) journalist, is brought back to restore the publication to its former glory, unaware that tech billionaire Benji Barnes (Justin Theroux) plans to buy it for his girlfriend, Andy\u2019s former colleague Emily (Blunt).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n To many, Theroux\u2019s character may sound like an obvious nod to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his foray into media, which has, so far, included <\/span>buying and gutting The Washington Post<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>potentially eyeing Cond\u00e9 Nast<\/span><\/a> (publisher of Vogue, which inspired Runway) as a wedding gift to his wife, Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos, per mid-2025 reports. <\/span>Anna Wintour, Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s chief content officer, seemingly <\/span>denied those rumors<\/span><\/a> last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n However, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna told <\/span>Variety<\/span><\/a>, \u201cWe already had a script and were making the movie when the rumors [of Bezos considering an acquisition of Cond\u00e9 Nast] started happening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIt wasn\u2019t inspired by anything,\u201d she added. \u201cBut, we did say, \u2018Whoa\u2019 when it happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n A rep for Blunt also <\/span>told Variety<\/span><\/a> that it was \u201cabsolutely not true\u201d that her character was <\/span>based on S\u00e1nchez Bezos<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n The timing of the movie\u2019s release, mere days before this year\u2019s Bezos-backed Met Gala \u2014 the annual, multimillion-dollar fundraising event that has been a major revenue source for Cond\u00e9 Nast<\/a> \u2014 was pretty hard to ignore. The fact that Jeff and Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos also serve as honorary chairs of the gala further underscored the overlap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n But there were even eerier connections between the Bezos and the \u201cDevil Wears Prada\u201d sequel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Much like Benji Barnes, Jeff Bezos was far from a fashion advocate when he attended his first Met Gala over a decade ago while still married to philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Post-divorce, one of the world\u2019s richest men and Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos have been front-row guests at Fashion Week, with the latter earning a Vogue spread<\/a> featuring her wedding to the tech mogul.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Sounds awfully similar to the makeover upgrade Benji got after divorcing his philanthropic wife (played by Lucy Liu) in the film, thanks to his fashion-forward and well-connected new girlfriend.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n On Monday, the Bezos couple served as lead sponsors of fashion\u2019s biggest night \u2013 and many oppose their presence.
