NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Will a rom-com set in New York charm enough voters? Perhaps it will be a vampire musical set on the opposite coast of America. Can a send-up of the movie \u201cTitanic\u201d float to the top? Or even a send-up of golden-era Broadway musicals themselves?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It’s Tony Award nomination time, and entry into the top crown category \u2014 best new musical \u2014 is up for grabs in a year with 30 shows eligible but no strong consensus on best new musicals or plays. Even though there are no such things as locks, it’s very likely that John Lithgow and Joshua Henry will hear their names called.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Uzo Aduba and Darren Criss on Tuesday will announce the nominees in 26 categories, setting off a month of campaigning that results in trophies that could make or break a show. The nominations will be revealed at 8:30 a.m. EDT live on \u201cCBS Mornings\u201d and then at 9 a.m. EDT live on the Tony Awards YouTube Page.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Six new musicals will be looking for berths: \u201cTwo Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),\u201d an opposites-attract rom-com set during a New York City weekend in which a cake is ferried across town; \u201cThe Lost Boys,\u201d an adaptation of a 1987 teen movie vampire thriller; and \u201cSchmigadoon!,\u201d an adaptation of an Apple TV series that gently mocks Broadway musicals. Two others include \u201cTitanique,\u201d a camp musical comedy that reimagines the 1997 megahit movie \u201cTitanic,\u201d and \u201cBeaches,\u201d which celebrates the deep bonds of female friendship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One musical will hope for love from Tony voters but likely won’t get it: \u201cThe Queen of Versailles,\u201d based on a 2012 documentary film about the quixotic attempt to build the largest private home in America. Despite reuniting star Kristin Chenoweth with her \u201cWicked\u201d songwriter Stephen Schwartz, the musical was savaged by critics and closed after less than 90 performances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Best new plays<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The best new play leaders are the Lithgow-led \u201cGiant,\u201d which explores accusations of antisemitism against children\u2019s author Roald Dahl; \u201cLiberation,\u201d about a consciousness-raising women\u2019s group in 1970s Ohio that won the Pulitzer Prize for drama on Monday; and \u201cThe Balusters,\u201d a wry comedy about a small-town neighborhood association that descends into chaos over whether to install a stop sign.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Other best new play candidates are \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road,\u201d about a struggling writer who returns to his rural hometown to settle his dead father\u2019s estate, and \u201cThe Fear of 13,\u201d the true story of a man who spent more than two decades on death row, starring Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The best lead actor in a play category will likely include Lithgow from \u201cGiant,\u201d Mark Strong from a modern revival of \u201cOedipus\u201d and Nathan Lane in \u201cDeath of a Salesman.\u201d Others could be Daniel Radcliffe in \u201cEvery Brilliant Thing\u201d<\/a> and Brody, making his Broadway debut.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On the women\u2019s side of the play category, likely candidates include Lesley Manville from \u201cOedipus,\u201d Carrie Coon from \u201cBug,\u201d Susannah Flood from \u201cLiberation\u201d and one or two from \u201cFallen Angels\u201d \u2014 Kelli O\u2019Hara and Rose Byrne. But Laurie Metcalf, with two strong performances this season in both \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road\u201d and \u201cDeath of a Salesman,\u201d deserves to hear her name called. And a sentimental choice is June Squibb, who at 96 has become the oldest actor to open a show on Broadway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Best actor in a musical candidates include Joshua Henry and Brandon Uranowitz both from \u201cRagtime,\u201d Sam Tutty in \u201cTwo Strangers,\u201d Nicholas Christopher in \u201cChess\u201d and Luke Evans from \u201cThe Rocky Horror Show.\u201d On the women’s side, Caissie Levy from \u201cRagtime,\u201d Lea Michele from \u201cChess,\u201d Marla Mindelle for \u201cTitanique\u201d and Christiani Pitts from \u201cTwo Strangers\u201d are strong possibilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Play and musical revivals <\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The best play revival category is stacked with well-received options: \u201cOedipus,\u201d a modern retelling of Sophocles\u2019 classic tragedy set on election night in a modern campaign office; \u201cDeath of a Salesman,\u201d Arthur Miller\u2019s masterpiece that looks at the unraveling of the American Dream; and \u201cBug,\u201d about two lost souls who spiral into delusion via drugs, alcohol and paranoia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There’s also \u201cProof,\u201d David Auburn\u2019s exploration of family, mental health and the delicate balance between genius and instability; \u201cMarjorie Prime,\u201d a play about memories, identity, mortality, aging and the role of artificial intelligence; and \u201cJoe Turner\u2019s Come and Gone,\u201d playwright August Wilson\u2019s look at Black life in the 1910s set in a Pittsburgh boarding house.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Also among the 11 best play revival hopefuls are \u201cWaiting for Godot\u201d with \u201cBill & Ted\u201d stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winters, to \u201cEvery Brilliant Thing,\u201d<\/a> a one-person show that explores the antidotes to depression starring Radcliffe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There were five musical revivals, including a glorious, Henry-led \u201cRagtime,\u201d at Lincoln Center, which is a virtual lock, with others including \u201cThe Rocky Horror Show,\u201d the sci-fi, cross-dressing rock musical that became a cult film, and \u201cCats: The Jellicle Ball,\u201d which reimagines the 1980s musical into a celebration of queer ballroom culture. Also in the mix are \u201cMamma Mia!,\u201d the ABBA-fueled, feel-good rom-com, and \u201cChess,\u201d the Cold War-set love triangle between two chess grand masters and the woman who loved both.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Tony Awards will be handed out June 7 at Radio City Music Hall during a telecast hosted by Pink. The awards will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Last year\u2019s show \u2014 hosted by \u201cWicked\u201d star Cynthia Erivo \u2014 drew 4.85 million viewers to CBS, its largest broadcast audience in six years, according to Nielsen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
