NEW YORK, May 5 (Reuters) – New musicals \u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d and \u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d topped this year\u2019s Tony \u2060Award \u2060nominations with 12 each, with a new production \u2060of \u201cRagtime\u201d close behind with 11, as Broadway\u2019s latest season drew notice for ambitious new work, high-profile revivals and packed houses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Both \u200bnew productions scored across major categories, including best musical, acting and design, signaling broad support from nominators, while \u201cRagtime\u201d reaffirmed its enduring resonance with recognition for its sweeping score and a slate \u200cof standout performances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The nominations, announced on Tuesday by \u200cactors Uzo Aduba and Darren Criss ahead of a June 7 awards night, offer a snapshot of a Broadway season defined by new musicals, bold revivals and a renewed \u2060sense of what it \u2060means to gather in a theater post-pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
CELEBRITIES FLOOD BROADWAY, ONSTAGE AND OFF<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
This season has also been marked \u200bby even more celebrities making their Broadway debuts, like Adrien Brody, Tessa Thompson and Patrick Ball, along with an uptick in celebrity producers including Kim Kardashian (\u201cThe Fear of 13\u201d) and Barack Obama (\u201cProof\u201d). None of those shows or people were nominated, however.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Joshua Henry was nominated for best actor in a musical for his role as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in \u201cRagtime,\u201d one of the most talked-about performances \u200bof the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
His nomination caps a breakout moment that included his opening the Met Gala red carpet on Monday night with a performance of \u201cI Wanna \u2060Dance with \u2060Somebody\u201d by Whitney Houston, choreographed by \u201cRagtime\u201d \u2060choreographer Ellenore Scott, who was also \u200bnominated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Henry\u2019s co-star Caissie Levy, nominated for the first time 20 years after her Broadway debut in \u201cHairspray,\u201d told Reuters it gives her \u201ca huge amount of \u200bsatisfaction and joy in being recognized by my \u2060community at this point in my life for this role and in this show that is so resonant right now in the world we’re living in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Nicholas Christopher,\u00a0the first Bermudian to be nominated for a Tony, got the nod\u00a0for his commanding turn as the tortured Anatoly in \u201cChess,\u201d outshining his better-known co-stars Lea Michele and Aaron Tveit, who were not nominated. Another co-star, Hannah Cruz, was also nominated for best featured actress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cAudiences are really responding to this show in a beautiful way,\u201d Christopher told Reuters. \u201cThe music is the hook that grabs people \u2060and then I think they\u2019re a little bit surprised at how emotionally attached they get to these flawed human beings, and \u2060they\u2019re rooting for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Mark Strong, nominated for his role as the title character in this season\u2019s reimagining of \u201cOedipus,\u201d which scored seven nominations, told Reuters he thought the production had a powerful impact on audiences because of its timelessness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThe fact that we’re still telling that story, but to be able to update it to a modern idiom, and to a political idiom, as well as all of the family stuff that happens in the story, makes it so immediate for a modern audience,\u201d Strong said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Nine-time nominee Kelli O\u2019Hara, starring in \u201cFallen Angels\u201d alongside Rose Byrne, who is also nominated, said that doing the big physical comedy feels new for her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not necessarily something I knew about in myself. I’m grateful for the opportunity to try new things at this point in my life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
In a season full of beloved and well-reviewed musical revivals, only three of a possible five nominations were announced \u2060in the category: \u201cCats: The Jellicle Ball,\u201d \u201cRagtime\u201d and “The Rocky Horror Show.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Bess Wohl\u2019s \u201cLiberation\u201d was nominated for best play a day after it won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. The Pulitzer committee called it, in part, \u201ca striking blend of comedy and sincerity that explores the legacy of the consciousness-raising feminist groups of the 1970s.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
June Squibb, who made her return to Broadway at 96, was nominated for her role in \u201cMarjorie Prime.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The awards will take place at Radio City \u200bMusic Hall in New York City, hosted by\u00a0pop star Pink, and will be broadcast on CBS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
