{"id":2404554,"date":"2026-05-06T13:06:43","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T13:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2404554"},"modified":"2026-05-06T13:06:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T13:06:43","slug":"inside-black-rabbits-new-york-music-design-and-locations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/inside-black-rabbits-new-york-music-design-and-locations\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside Black Rabbit\u2019s New York: Music, Design and Locations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-sel=\"article-content\" data-uia=\"article-content\" data-id=\"cab4962bfcbe48b69fdd7d7e14dbebd0\">\n<p>In bringing the limited series\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/black-rabbit\"><i>Black Rabbit<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>to life, creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman knew that getting the vibe right \u2014\u00a0the insatiable frenzy that surrounds the hectic <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/videos\/black-rabbit-jude-law-jason-bateman-behind-the-scenes\">world of dining and nightlife in New York City<\/a> \u2014\u00a0was as important as anything. \u201cOne of the things that was great about working on the show is just how specific it is to the city,\u201d Susman says. \u201cWe wanted it to feel very lived-in.\u201d The plot centers on two brothers, played by Jude Law and Jason Bateman \u2014 both of whom also served as executive producers \u2014\u00a0and the shepherding of the cool, chaotic downtown tavern that gives the show its name. \u201cThere was an evergreen relatability to the story, even though we\u2019re in this grimy subset of society you don\u2019t get to see often,\u201d says Bateman. \u201cIt\u2019s really about two brothers who love each other but don\u2019t match \u2014 one\u2019s a screwup, and the other is better at hiding his dysfunction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-wrapper default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-456bw7 eoienyz1\">\n<div class=\"inlineImageCollection default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-1avyp1d\" data-uia=\"card\" data-sel=\"media-card\" data-content-type=\"inlineImageCollection\">\n<div class=\"default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-kdbhus\">\n<div class=\"default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-6lyyxt\">\n<div class=\"fade-in-subject default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-c7h9h5\"><picture><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>True to the up-all-night energy of the setting, music plays a central role. In flashbacks, we see that the two brothers once fronted a raucous \u201990s punk band \u2014 scenes that, thanks to costume designer Amy Westcott, are packed with spot-on stylistic details, including Law\u2019s irreverent blond wig. To get the band\u2019s sound right, they enlisted Albert Hammond Jr. of the legendary New York rock band the Strokes to write two original songs for the band to perform. \u201cI just kept sending them bits and bits, and they just kept giving me information. The best one was from Jason, where he was like, \u2018I need a big drum fill before the chorus,\u2019 \u201d Hammond Jr. says. \u201cThe back-and-forth was fun.\u201d Law, who handled vocals, relished the opportunity to work with a rock legend. \u201cI was told early on in my career, if you\u2019re asked to suggest ideas for something, start at the top. Albert was at the top of the list, and we couldn\u2019t believe he said yes,\u201d Law says. \u201cAlbert worked miracles. He actually made me sound like I could sing. Short\/Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Of course, the Black Rabbit\u2019s physical backdrop had to be just so, and production designer Alex DiGerlando pulled references from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/black-rabbit-locations-new-york\">real-life New York haunts<\/a> like Chumley\u2019s, One if by Land, Two if by Sea, Fraunces Tavern, and Freemans Restaurant. \u201cBut the real eureka moment was unlocked when we stumbled upon the Water Street location,\u201d DiGerlando says of the existing locale they used for the restaurant. \u201cThe second we got out of the van under the Brooklyn Bridge overpass and we saw this old wooden building on a corner with all these great irregularities and character, we were like, \u2018This has got to be it.\u2019\u201d For the interiors, DiGerlando was tasked with building out full sets that would look, feel, and even <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/features\/black-rabbit-restaurant-locations-production\">function like they\u2019re authentic<\/a>. \u201cOur interiors are such that I found it very hard to believe that this place doesn\u2019t really exist,\u201d says Law. \u201cThe fact that you can walk through the ground floor and go straight into the kitchen with a full functional walk-in fridge, burners, that our people then can use to cook \u2014 that\u2019s just an indulgence as a filmmaker that you don\u2019t normally get.\u201d For cinematographers Igor Martinovi\u0107 and Pete Konczal, the latter of whom won the American Society of Cinematographers award for the finale episode of the series, the intricacy of the set offered seemingly endless interesting shot opportunities. \u201cThere are lots of layers of depth in these spaces, which makes for interesting reveals as you turn around the corners,\u201d says DiGerlando.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-wrapper default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-456bw7 eoienyz1\">\n<div class=\"inlineImageCollection default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-1avyp1d\" data-uia=\"card\" data-sel=\"media-card\" data-content-type=\"inlineImageCollection\">\n<div class=\"default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-kdbhus\">\n<div class=\"default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-6lyyxt\">\n<div class=\"fade-in-subject default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-c7h9h5\"><picture><img decoding=\"async\" data-uia=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/dnm.nflximg.net\/api\/v6\/2DuQlx0fM4wd1nzqm5BFBi6ILa8\/AAAAQRt_fXvxUklekDjgWQnnjlEPX_WuUeUxTbor5aIvbQLKnvymbfBwviPD8IbgI3xPg4pEo6vBzxRYxeEQ45a8SHngIxeAmGRheeJuWTl90gROJVubzehgrN2w2p9M9DebKGxXQBtnC0AoSMOgjlxSP4q7.jpg?r=f17\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dimly lit bar counter with bottles of liquor, glasses, a cash register, drink-making tools, handwritten notes, sports pennants, and humorous signs in a cozy, casual setting.\" class=\"default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-1d3w5wq\"\/><\/picture>\n<div data-uia=\"media-details\" class=\"default-ltr-iqcdef-cache-1uqj6e3\">\n<p>Michelle K. Short\/Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The series was helmed variously by different directors, including Ben Semanoff, Justin Kurzel, Bateman himself \u2014 who took on the first two episodes\u00a0\u2014\u00a0plus Bateman\u2019s\u00a0<i>Ozark<\/i> co-star Laura Linney. \u201cI had a ringer up my sleeve who lives very close by, named Laura Linney, who directed one of the best episodes ever on\u00a0<i>Ozark<\/i>. Until\u00a0<i>Black Rabbit,<\/i> it was the only thing she\u2019d ever directed,\u201d Bateman says. \u201cWhen the opportunity came up, I took her out to dinner, and I said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to ambush you, but think about it,\u2019 and I\u2019m really, really proud that she said yes. She put her stamp on the show. She came in and just fucking killed it. Short\/Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In order to give the show a sense of on-the-street authenticity, the team filmed around the city at iconic locales like the West Village, Coney Island, and the vaunted old school schvitz, the 10th Street Russian and Turkish Baths, which has been open since 1892. Still, it\u2019s that original Water Street location that gives\u00a0<i>Black Rabbit<\/i> an almost spectral sense of both history and edge. \u201cIt was built in 1794, and to put that into context, the building was 75 years old at the start of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge,\u201d DiGerlando says. \u201cOriginally, it was a little grocery that was right on the water\u2019s edge.
