The public park component of a major Atlanta TV\/film studio complex will soon be home to an events venue like no other in town\u2014or in North America, for that matter, per project leaders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Construction of phase two at Doraville\u2019s <\/span>Assembly Atlanta<\/span><\/a> marked a milestone this week when its concert and events venue Assembly Bandshell\u2014colloquially nicknamed \u201cthe Pringle\u201d\u2014saw its uniquely curvy roof hoisted into place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The job of attaching the open-air bandshell to its support structure in six places required a crane. The goal is to create a \u201cworld-class public amenity for metro Atlanta\u201d that anchors a public greenspace situated just beyond the gates of Assembly Studios, where productions including Apple TV\u2019s forthcoming Cape Fear <\/span>remake<\/span><\/a> have recently <\/span>been filmed<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis [structure] is made out of wood, so getting it to bend and take shape like that is truly a work of art,\u201d a project rep tells Urbanize Atlanta. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bandshell project\u2014designed by Atlanta-based Smith Dalia Architects, fabricated by StructureCraft, and installed by Bailey Construction\u2014marks the longest-bending active timber gridshell in North America, according to its creators. It also represents the beginning of Assembly Atlanta\u2019s second phase, where more mixed-use plans are scheduled to be announced soon, following delays several years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assembly Atlanta expects to hold its first events at the bandshell by the end of June, project leaders tell Urbanize Atlanta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Plans calls for live music, film screenings, cultural events, and other community gatherings to be held at the Pringle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assembly\u2019s initial phase included construction of the park, which features walkways and a pond with an LED fountain show, along with <\/span>studios and building exteriors<\/span><\/a> that have stood in for worldly locations such as New York, New Orleans, and major European cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile nearby, on the other side of Doraville\u2019s MARTA station, the <\/span>Doraville City Center<\/span><\/a> project is under construction after breaking ground last summer on 13 acres owned by the city. Phase one includes a multifaceted project called The People\u2019s Building and a large central greenspace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
