The Cal Poly Humboldt School of Dance, Music, and Theatre presents the University Singers and Humboldt Chorale, led by choral director Rachel Samet, in two live concerts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Fulkerson Recital Hall on the Arcata campus.<\/p>\n
The concert, titled \u201cA Crowded Table,\u201d celebrates the idea of cultivating community and embracing diversity. Concert tickets are $15 general, $5 children, and free for Cal Poly Humboldt students with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at tickets.humboldt.edu\/dance-music-and-theatre.<\/p>\n
The 100-plus member Humboldt Chorale welcomes the audience in a party setting with the lively \u201cBrindisi\u201d chorus from Verdi\u2019s \u201cLa Traviata.\u201d Andrea Ramsey\u2019s arrangement of The Highwomen\u2019s \u201cA Crowded Table\u201d follows, welcoming everyone with a folk-like feel. Walter Robinson\u2019s \u201cHarriet Tubman\u201d celebrates the iconic heroine and in a fun and engaging way with Kathleen McGuire\u2019s bluesy arrangement. Jacob Narverud\u2019s \u201cLunar Lullaby\u201d invites all to dream with soaring melodies and rich harmonies. Canadian composer Brian Tate\u2019s \u201cConnected\u201d is an upbeat call for seeing diverse humans come together as one community. The Humboldt Chorale concludes the first half with Susan Brumfield\u2019s \u201cNo Time,\u201d an emotionally impactful arrangement of a traditional camp meeting song.<\/p>\n
The University Singers start the second half of the program with Felix Mendelssohn\u2019s double choir motet, \u201cHeilig,\u201d followed by Thomas Morley\u2019s well-known English madrigal, \u201cSing we and chant it.\u201d Jocelyn Hagen\u2019s \u201cBelong\u201d embraces inclusiveness with rich, jazz-influenced harmonies and poignant lyrics. Lars Jansson\u2019s \u201cTo the Mothers in Brazil: Salve Regina\u201d combines traditional Latin text with a compassionate backstory about longing and the fight against injustice. The University Singers close their set with Zachary Moore\u2019s \u201cHope,\u201d which encapsulates optimism with intricate rhythms, delicate melodies and robust harmonies.<\/p>\n
The Humboldt Chorale and University Singers will join together to form a 130-member choir with the Yiddish folk song, \u201cAle Brider,\u201d arranged by Joshua Jacobson. It conveys the message, \u201cWe are all united, whether we have much or little.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Temporary Resonance Trio will perform Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Monday Club on Main Street in Fortuna.<\/p>\n
The trio is made up of Terrie Baune, violin; John Chernoff, piano; and Carol Jacobson, cello.<\/p>\n
