But in The Kyle and Jackie O Show\u2019s multimillion-dollar legal dispute the warring parties are arguing about when those <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/apr\/23\/kyle-sandilands-kiis-fm-rants-court-documents-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">heated exchanges<\/a> before a hot mic were bullying and when they were content. Content for which the radio station paid its stars a hefty $20m a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In fresh <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fedcourt.gov.au\/services\/access-to-files-and-transcripts\/online-files\/sandilands-henderson-v-cth-broadcasting-corp\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">documents filed<\/a> in the federal court it\u2019s revealed that when Kyle Sandilands walked out after a fight with Jackie \u201cO\u201d Henderson in 2023 she said \u201cpeople would tune in for\u201d a podcast on the fight and it would \u201cprobably get our highest ratings\u201d. Have a listen for all the details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In March <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/18\/kyle-sandilands-jackie-o-henderson-kiis-arn-contract-sacked-radio\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Sandilands was sacked by ARN Media<\/a> and the top-rating show was cancelled, sparking a wave of legal claims from all parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Backed up by multiple examples of heated exchanges Sandilands has asserted that the conduct his former bosses now say was \u201cserious misconduct\u201d and warranted his sacking was \u201cpublicly exploited\u201d. He said Kiis FM management had \u201csought to monetise the conduct\u201d and had given him the impression his conversations with Henderson were \u201cnot unacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Similarly, when Henderson disparaged Sandilands for taking sick days, the behaviour was \u201cencouraged\u201d, Sandilands said in defence documents to the company\u2019s cross-claim. This led the shock jock to assume the \u201cconduct was not unacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The documents detail episodes when the pair used ChatGPT as a therapist, with Henderson asking: \u201cHow do I tell my colleague that I get annoyed when he always calls in sick?\u201d She also told it: \u201cThis is bullshit. Don\u2019t listen to him. He\u2019s a liar. That\u2019s my truth. How do I tell my colleague all he does is exaggerate and lie? He\u2019s a gaslighter. Is my truth not important?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sandilands asserted these comments had been replayed on the program three times in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Justice Angus Stewart has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/apr\/24\/kyle-sandilands-kiis-fm-arn-radio-contract-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">set a date<\/a> for a 10-day trial in October.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"writers-duke-it-out\" class=\"dcr-12pc8kk\">Writers duke it out<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">An <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/inquirer\/how-the-media-went-from-newsroom-watchdogs-to-activist-brands\/news-story\/7b897103f7813298daaf0a35d3986faa\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">error in the Weekend Australian<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/overland.org.au\/2026\/05\/journalism-in-decline-a-response-to-michael-gawenda\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a response<\/a> in the literary magazine Overland have provided observers with plenty of entertainment all week as the two writers duked it out in the comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It started with a lengthy piece in the Murdoch broadsheet headed \u201cHow the media went from newsroom watchdogs to activist brands\u201d by Michael Gawenda. The former editor of the Age was angry with the way journalists have covered antisemitism and he ranted about \u201cethical standards\u201d and \u201ceditorial standards\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"dcefc70e-020a-4ead-a411-a2dd2fa6c4d9\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Michael Gawenda\u2019s contested article in The Australian<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He repeated his regular complaint that the Age has refused to publish him since the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October: \u201cNot a single piece by me has been published since October 7 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Australian, which publishes him regularly these days, is \u201cpretty good\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn my view, The Australian\u2019s coverage of these issues \u2013 I mean in particular how the rise in Jew-hatred had affected the lives of Australian Jews and threatened Australian multiculturalism \u2013 has been pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gawenda took a swipe along the way at the ABC Media Watch host, Linton Besser, for his coverage of the issue, the ABC Americas editor, John Lyons, and the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/jeff-sparrow\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">author and University of Melbourne academic Jeff Sparrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was when he came to Sparrow that Gawenda, 79, came a cropper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe journalists who signed [a letter about reporting on the war in Gaza] were, in the main, the product of university journalism courses in which they were instructed by academics such as the aforementioned Sparrow, the editor of Overland magazine,\u201d Gawenda said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDays after the October 7 attacks, Sparrow organised and published the now-infamous letter signed by hundreds of writers that urged the massacre by Hamas of 1200 Israelis to be seen as an act of \u2018resistance\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Unfortunately for Gawenda, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/overland.org.au\/author\/jeff-sparrow\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Sparrow<\/a> was not the editor of Overland, and he neither organised nor published the letter. Gawenda\u2019s key anecdote rests on a complete falsehood, one that even a cursory Google search would have debunked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gawenda jumped into the comments section on Overland and doubled down, blaming the publication for an old web page which said Sparrow was the editor. \u201cAnyway, Sparrow signed the letter and I believe, from people I know, that he talked to writers to urge them to sign it,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Late Thursday, days after Sparrow asked for a correction and an apology, The Australian\u2019s article was partially corrected. The first mention now has Sparrow as \u201ca former editor of Overland\u201d but the second still has him as \u201cthe editor of Overland magazine\u201d. There is no editor\u2019s note to acknowledge the changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sparrow told Weekly Beast: \u201cNothing says journalistic ethics like surreptitiously correcting falsehoods without telling your readers \u2013 and nothing says journalistic quality like bungling your surreptitious correction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The editor-in-chief of the Australian, Michelle Gunn, was approached for comment.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"off-target\" class=\"dcr-12pc8kk\">Off target<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">An article on the ABC News site on Wednesday had a dramatic headline: \u201cMore than 8 million people rely on income support, driven by a growing number of mental health claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"f274422d-dc62-46e2-845b-78ebc2293fdc\" data-spacefinder-role=\"supporting\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-a2pvoh\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-9ktzqp\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">The ABC headline before it was corrected<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to Services Australia, the term \u201cincome support\u201d refers to regular safety net payments \u2013 in other words, welfare payments. That would mean almost 30% of Australians are receiving welfare payments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When you got into the story you discover that \u201cincome support\u201d refers to sick leave from an employer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The \u201cvast majority \u2013 about 7.5 million \u2013 are accessing more employer provided sick leave, typically for short periods of around three weeks, rather than government welfare payments such as JobSeeker or the disability support pension\u201d, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-06\/income-support-grows-mental-health-work\/106626692\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the article said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The story was based on a press release from the Council of Australian Life Insurers, which represents life insurance and income protection providers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After it was published a rider was added acknowledging the source: \u201cCALI \u2013 whose members have a direct commercial interest in reducing long\u2011term income protection claims \u2013 argues earlier intervention is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The article was criticised by many, including the welfare advocate Tom Studans, who said the ABC had \u201cuncritically published industry lobby misinformation without any independent expert assessment, which has been reposted by right-wing agitators to promote anti-welfare rhetoric\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Queensland Greens senator Penny Allman-Payne <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/senatorpennyqld\/status\/2052268108136759575\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said on X<\/a> the story was \u201cbeing weaponised to demonise people on welfare and undermine the social safety net. It\u2019s a dangerous headline and the ABC needs to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">We can\u2019t disagree with that.
