\n\tCharli xcx<\/a> is living the year of going all-out. With the release today of \u201cRock Music,\u201d the British singer, songwriter and producer switches gears, cranks up the amps and rocks it with electric guitars.<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of those amps goes out the window at the top of the official music video. Shot in black and white, and directed by Aidan Zamiri, the clip follows Charli as she gets up to rock \u2018n\u2019 roll stuff, strutting around central Manhattan wearing fewer clothes than anyone else, smoking up a storm, and unleashing a moshpit.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt its musical core, \u201cRock Music\u201d has a throwback edge, its guitar riff slotting into what is essentially a mid-paced electronic track in which Charli splices and dices her vocals in the chorus. No, it\u2019s not heavy<\/em>. \u201cRock Music\u201d has more in common to Daft Punk than it does to Deep Purple.<\/p>\n

\n\tCharli first teased her new era, new sound in\u00a0an April interview<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0British Vogue<\/em>, which premiered one of the new song\u2019s lyrics: \u201cI think the dance floor is dead, so now we\u2019re making rock music.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe told the publication, \u201cif I\u2019d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad. That\u2019s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCharli\u00a0has since clarified<\/a>\u00a0that she isn\u2019t necessarily performing an about-face for what would be album No. 8. On Instagram, she recently shared a clip of herself in the studio and wrote, \u201ca video of me making a song called \u2018rock music\u2019 that is not actually rock music which is funny because i never said i was making a rock album.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cRock Music\u201d is Charli\u2019s first release since the Wuthering Heights<\/em>\u00a0companion album arrived in February, and dropped in at No. 8 on the\u00a0Billboard 200<\/a>\u00a0chart. Before that, her 2024 Brat<\/em>\u00a0album peaked at No. 3 on the all-genres chart, peaked at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart and ARIA Chart, and caught the zeitgeist.<\/p>\n

\n\tCharli\u2019s busy year includes a starring role in A24\u2019s\u00a0The Moment<\/em>, based on her original idea and the first co-production from her new studio365 venture. Also, she appears in Daniel Goldhaber\u2019s remake of the 1978 cult horror\u00a0Faces of Death<\/em>, Greg Araki\u2019s erotic thriller\u00a0I Want Your Sex<\/em>, Cathy Yan\u2019s independent film\u00a0The Gallerist<\/em>, Julia Jackman\u2019s period fantasy\u00a0100 Nights Of Hero<\/em>, Romain Gavras\u2019 satirical action\u00a0Sacrifice<\/em>\u00a0and Pete Ohs\u2019 intimate drama\u00a0Erupcja<\/em>.<\/p>\n
