Shepherd and Whitley are known for letting the energy of the room shape the conversation, often veering off-script as personal confessions spark improvised riffs.<\/p>\n<p>The podcast pairs two entertainment veterans whose careers intersect across television, film and stand-up comedy. My team kept suggesting other comics, and I said, \u2018No, no, I can only do it with Kym.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But Whitley didn\u2019t take Shepherd seriously, and continued to dodge the idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe put me off like a man trying to chase her,\u201d Shepherd cracked. \u201cShe put me off for so many years because she had better things to do. She was busy, she was getting engaged to this one, she broke up with that one when the other one was getting engaged to her \u2026 I just said to her one day, \u2018Kym, let me pay for the podcast. I\u2019m telling you, it\u2019s going to be the best thing since sliced bread.\u2019 I wore her down like the men she almost got married to \u2013 the six of them!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKevin Hart wanted to produce our podcast. Jamie Foxx wanted to. We had a lot of takers, and we were going to start on Mother\u2019s Day \u2013 but when we were about to sign the deal, something called COVID happened. So, we borrowed equipment and started our podcast during COVID on Mother\u2019s Day. Three NAACP Image Awards later, with thousands of followers of the chaos that we put out there, we are still going strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>Whitley proudly took credit for Shepherd\u2019s success since the podcast launch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me tell you the truth,\u201d Whitley said. \u201cSherri\u2019s always wanted a talk show, since the day she started talking \u2013 and boy, can she talk! She kept asking to do a podcast because \u2026 when you\u2019re a comic or you\u2019re a runner, sometimes you have to feed that desire. And I believe she wanted the podcast because she had to get it out.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWhat I love is that (when) she did this during the pandemic, it was really preparing her for her own show, the \u2018Sherri\u2019 show. Even though she did \u2018The View,\u2019 this was her own thing. She got to keep that muscle going, just like stand up. She got to keep that talk show muscle going, and it came right up against her sitting in for Wendy (Williams) and going on to her own show. So, I want to take credit for her being her best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t argue that,\u201d said Shepherd.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">\u201cI fell in love with Detroit\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Both performers have deep history with Detroit, and said they\u2019re excited to return.<\/p>\n<p>Whitley said every time she\u2019s in town, her must-visit list includes the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/entertainment\/arts\/2026\/05\/02\/charles-wright-museum-viral-comedy-shorts\/89754542007\/\">Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History<\/a>, PizzaPapalis (\u201cI always get the deep dish seafood pizza!\u201d) and Oak Park\u2019s ElMar Furs.<\/p>\n<p>Her first visit to the city was in the late 1980s, while touring with playwright Shelly Garrett\u2019s urban theater megahit \u201cBeauty Shop.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI got to experience Detroit because it was the first stop on the tour,\u201d she recalled. \u201cSo young, excited, with a group of other young actors. And we got to live in Detroit, on First Street. I remember, we all had our own little apartments and we performed at the Music Hall. We were here for a month, and then we came back, so I really got immersed into Detroit. I have a couple of friends here, and they would drive us around and hang out. The people \u2026 I fell in love with Detroit.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI became friends with a group called Raw Voyces later on, and Mike Jeffers, who is a singer and part of Raw Voyces. He really showed me Detroit, and we\u2019re friends to this day. I fell in love with the African American Museum. We had a family reunion here last year; I\u2019ve got a bunch of cousins here. If there\u2019s a good spades game, we are there. Give me my American hot dogs anytime, any day. I love the people from Detroit. They tried to set up like an American dog in California, but it\u2019s just not the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Shepherd and Whitley confessed that, at one point, they\u2019d intended to buy properties in the city, but waited too long.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cDetroit is just fun,\u201d Shepherd said. \u201cThe people are real. Downtown is just so vibrant right now. I love to see it. They have so many Black-owned businesses, which I love to frequent. There are so many places to eat really good food. Detroit is a great city to be in \u2013 except, I don\u2019t want to run into my ex-husband. Other than that, it\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s true,\u201d Whitley chimed in. \u201cI got exes here too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was the stomping ground back in the day,\u201d Shepherd said. \u201cLet me tell you something: When I was in high school, we\u2019d go over to Detroit. My mother thought I was babysitting \u2013 we were in Detroit!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"89504038007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Bringing it to the stage<\/h2>\n<p>Friday night\u2019s audience can expect to laugh until they ache \u2013 which is also what happened during the course of this interview.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t been onstage together in a year,\u201d said Whitley. \u201cBut we\u2019re always together. They can expect to see stand-up; they see us on our podcast, but we are also stand-up comics, and they\u2019ll get to see us do our separate bits. But, what they\u2019re really going to see is Sherri probably blow me off the stage, because she\u2019s been on tour, and I\u2019m really afraid to get up there this time. But I\u2019m gonna put my big girl panties on and go up onstage with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Shepherd countered that statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they don\u2019t see is Kym \u2013 this is her second residency in Vegas, at the Jimmy Kimmel Comedy Club,\u201d Shepherd said, \u201cand Vegas is so difficult because you have people from all over the country coming in. They\u2019re not necessarily coming in to see a person \u2026 after they drank all night at the casino. And you the unenviable task of making all those people from everywhere laugh. Kym has done it; she did it successfully once and they asked her back twice. What I admire about her is she has been out here doing all of these gigs and selling out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd said that, in addition to the podcast taping and individual stand-up sets, an audience Q&amp;A segment will also take place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we get together onstage,\u201d she said, \u201cwe have a really good time because we\u2019ve known each other for almost 31 years. We lived across the street from each other \u2013 I got evicted before Kym did. I have stayed at her house when I\u2019ve had fights with the ex-husband.
