Not even the biggest names in Hollywood are safe from the cutting room floor \u2013 and once a director hits the editing suite, the most A-list of A-listers can still find their scenes have been axed from a major film<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Whether it\u2019s a change in direction, contractual issues or a long runtime, there are many reasons why an actor might not make the cut, regardless of how they performed on set.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Here are just a handful of stars who gave their all, only to find their performances didn\u2019t make it into the final edit\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Devil Wears Prada 2 was a star-studded affair \u2013 but as Sydney Sweeney found out, not every cameo was included in the finished film<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The Devil Wears Prada 2<\/span><\/a> was jam-packed with famous cameos, but <\/span>some celebrities\u2019 performances didn\u2019t make the cut<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Last year, <\/span>Sydney Sweeney<\/span><\/a> was spotted on the set of the <\/span>Meryl Streep<\/span><\/a> sequel, but her appearance never made it into the film. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The <\/span>Euphoria<\/span><\/a> actor was <\/span>supposed to play herself in a three-minute scene<\/span><\/a> where she would be dressed by <\/span>Emily Blunt<\/span><\/a>\u2019s character, but according to <\/span>Entertainment Weekly<\/span><\/a>, this cameo was cut for structural reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At least she wasn\u2019t the only star who didn\u2019t make it into the film, though.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How to Get Away With Murder<\/span><\/a> star <\/span>Conrad Ricamora also filmed numerous scenes<\/span><\/a> as Andy Sachs\u2019 roommate, but this character was later removed from the film after test audiences raised questions about why he was there, according to <\/span>Variety<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Conrad acknowledged this axing on social media, writing on <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a> that filming with Anne Hathaway had been \u201cone of the best working experiences of my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIn the end, my character didn\u2019t make sense in the grand scheme of the film (something about me being too sexy and hot and my muscles being too big\u2026story of my life),\u201d he joked.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lastly, <\/span>Anna Wintour<\/span><\/a> herself filmed \u201cone take\u201d for the sequel, in which Meryl plays a character who has repeatedly been compared to the formidable Vogue editor.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Director David Frankel told <\/span>Entertainment Weekly<\/span><\/a> that this sequence couldn\u2019t be used as it was \u201ca little out of focus,\u201d and he didn\u2019t want to ask her to do a second one.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe actually explicitly didn\u2019t want Anna to be in the movie because it\u2019s a parallel world,\u201d the director later explained in the April 2026 interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt was like, well, what is Vogue and who is Anna Wintour, in a world where there\u2019s a Runway and Miranda Priestly? It felt like it was too meta.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Harrison Ford was supposed to play a school principal in E.T.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

After the success <\/span>Harrison Ford<\/span><\/a> had working with <\/span>Steven Spielberg<\/span><\/a> in the Indiana Jones films, the Star Wars actor was happy to make a cameo in E.T.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Not only was he good friends with the director, but he was also dating the movie\u2019s screenwriter, Melissa Mathison, at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Harrison was set to play against his normal lovable rogue type, appearing as Elliot\u2019s mean school principal, in a scene where the boy was sent to the principal\u2019s office and told off, only for the mischievous E.T. to start messing around.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The scene was eventually removed by Spielberg, though, as he felt that it added nothing to the film, and instead chose to focus less on adults and more on the film\u2019s kid characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Paul Rudd was a terrible blind date in Bridesmaids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Paul Rudd<\/a> spent all day throwing himself around an ice-skating rink, only for it to be deleted from the final cut of Bridesmaids<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Screenwriters Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo<\/span><\/a> specifically penned a part for the Ant-Man actor as a deranged man that Kristen\u2019s character, Annie, goes on a blind date with.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, while the scene was later included as a DVD extra, it wasn\u2019t featured in the cinematic cut of the film.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThere is always that terrible moment when you have to kill your babies,\u201d director Paul Feig told <\/span>Entertainment Weekly<\/span><\/a>, explaining that Paul\u2019s scenes were axed due to runtime, and to focus more on the existing love triangle between Annie, Jon Hamm\u2019s commitment-phobe and Chris O\u2019Dowd\u2019s police officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt just didn\u2019t ring true that in addition to Jon and Chris, she\u2019d be also going out on other dates to try and find more love,\u201d Feig explained, claiming that it made \u201cmore sense that she\u2019d be caught between these two guys\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Shailene Woodley\u2019s Mary Jane never made it into The Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

In fact, MJ was set to appear in the 2014 sequel, in which she\u2019d have been played by <\/span>Shailene Woodley<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, the director felt it wouldn\u2019t make sense to add another romantic character into the superhero film. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt was something we only discovered when we were shooting and then in the edit room.\u201d Marc Webb told the <\/span>Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/a>. \u201cShailene is a brilliant actress, and she did a great couple days of work. But it was very difficult to introduce someone as a competing love interest when so much is on the table with Peter and Gwen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Shailene actually agreed with this take, <\/span>telling Perru Nemiroff<\/span><\/a> that \u201c<\/span>Mary Jane was in four scenes in the whole film, and it didn\u2019t make sense\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re introducing so many new characters, it really didn\u2019t make sense to introduce such a vital character to the comic books in a movie that had so much going on,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Big Little Lies star did hint at the time that her character could perhaps appear in the third film in the franchise, but due to poor reviews and box office, that movie never happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tobey Maguire was too famous to appear in Life of Pi <\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Speaking of Spider-Man<\/span><\/a>, former Peter Parker actor <\/span>Tobey Maguire<\/span><\/a> was set to play a brief role in Ang Lee\u2019s Life Of Pi.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tobey would have played the writer who interviews the central character about his extraordinary life, having previously worked with Lee on 1997\u2019s The Ice Storm.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, after filming was over, the director was concerned that Tobey\u2019s presence would be distracting for viewers and the role was recast, with English actor Rafe Spall playing the character in the version that we got to see.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cTo be consistent with the other casting choices made for the film, I decided to go with an entirely international cast,\u201d Ang said in a statement at the time, before adding how much he admired Tobey and hoped to work again with him in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI fully support Ang\u2019s decision to go a different direction for this role in Life of Pi. Ang shared a lot of the film with me, and what I saw was absolutely beautiful,\u201d Tobey told <\/span>The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a> at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Later on, the Brokeback Mountain director opened up further to <\/span>USA Today<\/span><\/a> about his casting error and the real reason Tobey was cut. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI misjudged the situation. I underestimated the power of stars,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI love Tobey, but it\u2019s a small part, so when it\u2019s a movie star sitting there, it captures attention. It didn\u2019t really work out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ana de Armas\u2019 removal from Yesterday led to a real-life court case<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The removal of<\/span><\/a> Oscar nominee <\/span>Ana de Armas<\/span><\/a> from the final cut of the 2019 film <\/span>Yesterday <\/span><\/a>resulted in a federal lawsuit against Universal Pictures for false advertising.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ana appeared in a trailer for Yesterday, in which she played a woman who flirts with Himsesh Patel\u2019s character on a talk show, but when the film hit cinemas, these scenes were not included. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Screenwriter Richard Curtis explained that the Blonde actor was cut because test audiences didn\u2019t like the idea of the leading character straying from his primary love interest, played by Lily James.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Two men who later rented the film on Amazon Prime after seeing the actor in the trailer went on to sue production company Universal for false advertising, claiming they were each cheated out of $3.99.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the end, the lawsuit was dropped, but not before it generated plenty of conversation and headlines in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Uma Thurman was supposed to play Blake Lively\u2019s mother in Savages<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The Kill Bill star originally appeared in Oliver Stone\u2019s poorly-received Savages, playing <\/span>Blake Lively<\/span><\/a>\u2019s mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Stone explained that, while the scenes in question were \u201cfunny,\u201d they were cut due to the film\u2019s long runtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe ended up cutting characters from the book, like the mother. She was a good character \u2013 Uma Thurman played her beautifully \u2013 and the scenes were good, but you don\u2019t have time, you know?\u201d he told <\/span>celebrity.land<\/span><\/a> in 2012. \u201cWe have one goal in the movie, and you go out that gate and it\u2019s like a horse race.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Blake later lamented<\/span><\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s a shame that you will miss that, in the movie. It was really beautiful stuff with Uma Thurman, and I think it really told a lot more of how a girl could end up this way. She\u2019s the modern girl. However, considering the 50% <\/span>Rotten Tomatoes<\/span><\/a> score that Savages wound up receiving, Uma probably doesn\u2019t feel too bad about not appearing in it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Andy Garc\u00eda missed out on appearing as Michelle Pfeiffer\u2019s love interest in Dangerous Minds<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Andy was not exactly convinced this character was necessary, and told the creative team as much, but went ahead and filmed his scenes anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Simone Ashley\u2019s character was axed from F1<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Bridgerton<\/span><\/a> fans were excited to see <\/span>Simone Ashley<\/span><\/a> appear alongside Brad Pitt in 2025\u2019s F1. She was seen filming at various Grands Prix, and appeared at the film\u2019s European premiere, but only appears as herself in a <\/span>blink-and-you-miss-it moment in the final cut<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In an interview with <\/span>People<\/span><\/a>, the film\u2019s director, <\/span>Joseph Kosinski, explained why the \u201cincredible talent\u201d was cut.<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt happens on every film, where you have to shoot more than you can use,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were two or three storylines that ultimately didn\u2019t make into the final cut.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Despite the disappointment, Simone was gracious and appreciative of the experience, which saw her film at the actual races and alongside real F1 drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So, when fans sat to watch Fantastic Four: Four Steps with <\/span>Pedro Pascal<\/span><\/a> and Vanessa Kirby<\/a>, they were surprised to see the Oscar nominee\u2019s character had been cut.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Director Matt Shankman explained to <\/span>Variety<\/span><\/a> that the villain was supposed to appear in a lengthy scene in which the heroic quartet battled Red Ghost and his team of Super-Apes. Instead, this moment is edited down into an action montage, but while the Super-Apes are momentarily shown, Red Ghost is totally cut.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere were a lot of things that ultimately ended up hitting the cutting room floor,\u201d the director said, describing the removal of John\u2019s scenes as \u201cheartbreaking\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen we were building a \u201960s retro-future world, introducing all of these villains, introducing these four main characters as a group, as well as individually, introducing the idea of a child \u2013 there was a lot of stuff to balance in this movie and some things had to go ultimately in terms of shaping the film for its final version.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sienna Miller\u2019s storyline in Black Mass was reduced to a cameo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Sienna Miller<\/span><\/a>\u2019s entire role as Catherine Greig in the 2015 gangster flick Black Mass was cut from the final film, despite her working extensively on her Boston accent for the part.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Director Scott Cooper told the <\/span>Boston Globe<\/span><\/a> the Layer Cake actor had been \u201cfantastic\u201d as real-life gangster Whitey Bulger\u2019s long-term partner, Catherine, but he went in a different direction with the movie\u2019s plot. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Black Mass, which stars Johnny Depp as Bulger, ultimately focuses on the mobster\u2019s earlier life rather than his \u201cless dramatic\u201d later years as a fugitive with Catherine.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sienna admitted she spent time learning a South Boston accent<\/span><\/a> for the two-week shoot, which ultimately turned into a \u201ccameo\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe accent was something I really focused on because playing someone from Southie, you don\u2019t want to mess that up. Hopefully I\u2019ve managed to pull that off,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sterling K. Brown was supposed to play a neighbour in Split<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Sterling K. Brown<\/span><\/a> has seen huge success in recent years thanks to his roles on This Is Us and Paradise, as well as his Oscar-nominated turn in American Fiction. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But the actor has been dealt some blows in his time, too, including when his role in M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s 2015 horror Split was left on the cutting-room floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The <\/span>Emmy winner<\/span><\/a> was set to play Professor Shaw, the therapist of <\/span>James McAvoy<\/span><\/a>\u2019s character in the action film, but the Sixth Sense director ultimately decided that Sterling\u2019s role was unnecessary, and distracted from the film\u2019s core narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Days after the first movie hit cinemas, the Godfather actor sued the producers<\/a> for breach of contract, and while his request that further showings of Superman should be stopped was thrown out, he did receive a $15 million settlement as a result of the court case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The scenes he\u2019d already shot for the second film were subsequently removed to avoid having to pay him a substantial percentage of the film\u2019s box office, with his storyline instead being handed to Superman\u2019s mother, portrayed by Susannah York.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
