Today, Monta\u00f1o paints out of her mother\u2019s studio in Tucson\u2019s Menlo Park neighborhood \u2014 a different space than the one she grew up in but one that still reflects the same shared creative energy. When de la Torre isn\u2019t teaching, her daughters use the space to work on their own art.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI respect their technique,\u201d de la Torre said. \u201cIf they ask for help, I\u2019m there, but I try not to change who they are as artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That balance \u2014 guidance without pressure \u2014 has shaped Monta\u00f1o\u2019s artistic voice. While her mother\u2019s work often focuses on depth and realism, Monta\u00f1o has carved out her own path with vibrant, abstract pieces inspired by Mexican culture, identity and tradition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMy thing is culture \u2014 music, food, identity,\u201d Monta\u00f1o said. \u201cI just try to keep it alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Her work features everything from saints and cultural symbols to nods to mariachi and Tejano music, all rooted in her heritage. Her latest pieces focus on women \u2014 their strength, resilience and role in shaping culture \u2014 themes that feel especially fitting given the influence of the women in her own life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

For de la Torre, watching her daughter grow into her own artist has been one of her greatest sources of pride.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAlejandra is very good,\u201d she said. \u201cShe\u2019s going to go far.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Though both mother and daughter share a love of art, their styles \u2014 and personalities \u2014 are different. It\u2019s something de la Torre learned to embrace over time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
