Sandra Oh<\/a><\/strong>is getting candid about navigating the entertainment industry as an Asian actress during the rise of Grey’s Anatomy.<\/em><\/p>\n In an exclusive preview of the upcoming HBO documentary The A List: 15 Stories From Asian and Pacific Diasporas<\/em>, shared by The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em> on Friday<\/a>, May 8, Oh recalled feeling like she had to downplay her Korean heritage.<\/p>\n “The fact that half of the cast of\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy\u00a0<\/em>weren\u2019t white, that was a thing,\u201d\u00a0she said in the documentary clip. \u201cAnd it was almost like, \u2018Shush. Let\u2019s just not talk about it. Let\u2019s just do it and see if we can get away with it. Oh my gosh, it\u2019s a hit!\u201d<\/p>\n Further in the documentary, Oh poses the question, \u201cHow do you exist in a room that doesn\u2019t want you, or doesn\u2019t respect you? It was a different time.”<\/p>\n Oh also commented on the notion of incorporating Asian characters into mainstream white narratives as too risky is hopefully over.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s a feeling of where I come from, which is just like, \u2018let\u2019s just try and sneak it in. Let no one notice and we might have an existence, right?\u2019 I really hope that kind of thinking has passed,” she remarked.<\/p>\n The documentary also features interviews from Bowen Yang, Kumail Nanjiani, DJ Rekha, Yia Vang, Amanda Nguyen, Schulyer Bailar, Jada Yuan, Connie Chung,<\/strong> and more.<\/p>\n The A List: 15 Stories From Asian and Pacific Diasporas<\/em> is part of an ongoing series by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders<\/strong> highlighting underrepresented communities in America.
