{"id":2409745,"date":"2026-05-10T04:52:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T04:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2409745"},"modified":"2026-05-10T04:52:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T04:52:19","slug":"photographing-stars-in-cannes-are-days-i-will-never-forget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/photographing-stars-in-cannes-are-days-i-will-never-forget\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Photographing stars in Cannes are days I will never forget&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>An award-winning photographer who spent 20 years taking pictures of celebrities and royalty including Gene Kelly and Diana, Princess of Wales, at the Cannes Film Festival said they were days he &#8220;will never forget&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Richard Blanshard first arrived in Cannes as a 22-year-old in 1976, and went on to snap stars such as Muhammad Ali and Arnold Schwarzenegger.<\/p>\n<p>Blanshard, who was born in Essex and now lives in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, said Ali was a &#8220;wonderful character&#8221; who never objected to having his picture taken, but his entourage were like the &#8220;mafia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Photography is about storytelling and capturing the moment and also making people comfortable to achieve what you need without them even knowing,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Blanshard said stars and celebrities attended the festival to promote their films or to help raise money for a future project.<\/p>\n<p>He was assigned to Ali when the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:former world heavyweight champion;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-16011175?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Baol.com%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">former world heavyweight champion<\/a> visited the festival to gain support to make Freedom Road, which was inspired by Howard Fast&#8217;s 1944 best-selling novel.<\/p>\n<p>Ali needed to network to get the backing of financiers and distributors and &#8220;wherever [he] went, I went with him&#8221;, said Blanshard .<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once, on the spur of the moment, he decided he would like a drink, so we somehow got a table on the Carlton Hotel terrace.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Within two minutes it was mayhem, but [Ali] remained totally unflustered,&#8221; he recalled.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:960px\">\n<div class=\"content-image\"><img alt=\"A black and white image of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire walking down some steps in Cannes. Cosmatos and Alan Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We persuaded Arnold and Sly to dance together in front of them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shortly afterwards, Sly decided he wanted to go to the Carlton Hotel, so we jumped in a limo and drove off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the hotel, Sly got out and within seconds was surrounded by hundreds of screaming people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Panicked, he jumped onto the roof of the limo and was eventually smuggled out via the hotel kitchen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:960px\">\n<div class=\"content-image\"><img alt=\"A black and white image of Johnny Depp holding a cigarette.
