Connie Shakalis<\/span> Farces, magic and family musicals will attract a range of enlightenment seekers\u00a0during Constellation\u2019s 2026\/27 season, the entertainment company\u2019s fifth anniversary season. Four mainstage shows, a couple of Constellation for Kids shows plus a special event are coming. Management announced the news at a rollout party May 7 during the \u201cConstelLate\u201d show, a Constellation nighttime talk show rife with music, games and shenanigans.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI am so excited for the session,\u201d said board member Lynn Schwartzberg.\u201c \u2018Annie\u2019 is a delightful show with great parts for kids and adults.\u00a0PB&J Cafe is such a fun experience for kids. And \u2018The Cottage\u2019 is a riot. I saw it on Broadway and cannot wait to see it in Bloomington.\u201d<\/p>\n First comes \u201cHeist\u201d by Arun Lakra, in September. Susan and David Jones first commissioned \u201cHeist\u201d at Constellation, and according to a press release productions of the play have been \u201cgrossing millions at box offices across North America.\u201d It\u2019s now coming back to its Bloomington staring point. \u201cHeist,\u201d a thriller, runs September 3 \u2013 20 at the Waldron Auditorium. It was inspired by caper films such as \u201cOcean\u2019s Eleven\u201d and \u201cThe Sting.\u201d See what happens when one robs a robber.<\/p>\n \u201cHeist was actually an idea of mine to begin with,\u201d said Chad Rabinovitz, Constellation\u2019s artistic director. \u201cI’m obsessed with the genre and realized that there were no heists onstage, so I set out to make one.\u201d\u00a0Rabinovitz and playwright Arun Lakra developed the script for the play\u2019s first production, at Bloomington Playwrights Project. It closed after a few performances due to COVID-19.\u00a0 Since, it has become a favorite in Canada, \u201cselling over $2 million in tickets!\u00a0And now it’s about to play at some major theaters across the U.S.\u201d But first, it returns to Bloomington.<\/p>\n Later this fall, comes a musical mystery for kids, tweens–and adults who remember having read with a flashlight. \u201cGoosebumps the Musical: Phantom of the Auditorium\u201d derives from popular books by R. L. Stine and runs October 30 – November 15 at the Waldron Auditorium. For the holidays, it\u2019s \u201cAnnie\u201d at the Waldron Arts Center, December 10, 2026 \u2013 January 3, 2027.<\/p>\n An added event, designed for a holiday night out, is \u201cThe ConstelLate Show: Holiday Special,\u00a0Connecting Audiences Through World-Class Theater & Film\u201d is<\/p>\n Constellation\u2019s late-night talk show\/ variety show. During the holidays new guests appear each night, combining \u201cluminaries\u201d and performers. The show uses cameras and live monitors, and audiences are meant to feel as though they\u2019re in the TV-like broadcast. It runs December 17 – 27 in the Waldron Firebay. While this production is not included in season tickets, pass holders get early access to tickets.<\/p>\n The ConstelLate Show was born of management\u2019s search for a holiday tradition. \u201cMany theaters have a holiday variety show or cabaret they do annually,\u201d Rabinovitz said, \u201cand I’m hopeful to create our own tradition. But it’s important to me that it carries our identity and isn’t a carbon copy of what others do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The new year opens with Amy Herzog\u2019s Tony-nominated adaptation of Henrik<\/p>\n Ibsen\u2019s masterpiece \u201cAn Enemy of the People.\u201d A small-town doctor discovers a catastrophe that risks a townspeople\u2019s lives. He raises an alarm. The powerful citizens, however, try to destroy him. Called \u201ca play for our time\u201d by \u201cThe Hollywood Reporter,\u201d this play discusses truth, power and speaking up. Catch it February 4 \u2013 21 at the Waldron Auditorium.<\/p>\n For spring of 2027, audiences will see the U.S. premiere of \u201cMojo & Jimmy: The Totally Awesome Magic Show\u201d at the PB&J Cafe, Constellation\u2019s dinner theater for kids. Developed at Constellation, the show went to the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringe Festivals and is back in Bloomington. World Champion of Magic Simon Coronel and \u201cAmerica’s Got Talent\u201d semi-finalist Dom Chambers created it. See it at the Waldron Auditorium March 26 – April 11, 2027.<\/p>\n The mainstage season ends with Sandy Rustin\u2019s farce \u201cThe Cottage.\u201d Sylvia exposes her affair to her husband and her lover\u2019s wife. Now, a daisy-laden English country getaway becomes a thorny and improper calamity. The play was called \u201cBroadway’s Sensational Side-Splitting Screwball Comedy\u201d by \u201cEntertainment Weekly.\u201d Constellation\u2019s version of it runs May 13-30, 2027, at the Waldron Auditorium.<\/p>\n \u201cStage Door Circle\u201d is something new for Constellation\u2014and for women. As a Sunday playgoing club for women of all ages, this expanding group of theater fans attends first Sunday afternoon performances of Constellation\u2019s mainstage shows and enjoys a reception afterward.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe found from our surveys,\u201d Rabinovitz said, \u201cthat the number one reason people don’t attend a show is because they don’t have someone to go with.\u201d<\/p>\n Rabinovitz sees it as a book-club-like event. \u201cBut you get all of it in one night without the homework of having to read the book.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0To participate, complete the registration form on\u00a0Constellation\u2019s website, seeconstellation.org.<\/p>\n Season Ticket Packages for Constellation\u2019s 2026-2027 season are on sale. Constellation now offers season ticket holders free upgrades to premium seats in addition to previous perks.
