What a week. Where do we even begin?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with the jaw-dropper.<\/p>\n

Andrew Lownie, the biographer whose book \u201cEntitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York,\u201d is the undoubted royal book of last year, has landed a fresh mega-scoop in the paperback edition.<\/p>\n

The big allegation, which is making headlines around the world, is that Sarah Ferguson had a \u201cfriends with benefits\u201d relationship with disgraced rapper Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs.<\/p>\n

According to Lownie\u2019s sources, the pair first met in 2002 at a New York party thrown by none other than Ghislaine Maxwell. By 2004, they had embarked on what one associate of Combs described as a \u201csecret friends with benefits\u201d arrangement that lasted for years.<\/p>\n

They reportedly met in hotel rooms costing $50,000 a night, and Combs allegedly bragged about \u201cslamming\u201d the former Duchess of York. He even claimed his perfume, \u201cUnforgivable,\u201d was inspired by Ferguson and how she liked a man to smell.<\/p>\n

The book alleges that Ferguson took her daughter, Princess Eugenie, to one of Combs\u2019 yacht parties when Eugenie was just 16. A royal staff member told Lownie, \u201cSean\u2019s parties were wild. The fact that she brought Eugenie around was alarming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah Ferguson racked up millions in debt while living an astonishingly lavish lifestyle, the book claims.<\/p>\n

A former Bad Boy Records employee claims he heard Combs say he \u201ccould not wait until Fergie\u2019s daughters come of age.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just horrifying stuff.<\/p>\n

A source close to the former Duchess of York has described the allegations as \u201cblatantly untrue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lownie stands by the claims.<\/p>\n

Combs is currently serving a four-year sentence in federal prison following his 2025 conviction on charges of transporting individuals for prostitution.<\/p>\n

The book paints a devastating portrait of a man drowning in self-pity, entitlement, and delusion.<\/p>\n

There are extraordinary details: Andrew allegedly kicking a dog in the head; forcing employees to curtsy and barking \u201clower\u201d at them when they didn\u2019t go deep enough; and an incredible picture of his new life at Marsh Farm on the Sandringham estate, where he apparently plays Call of Duty all night while neglecting work, health, and hygiene.<\/p>\n

Andrew is cited as having told a source, who relayed the conversation to Lownie: \u201cI feel a deep-rooted sense of being alone in the world. I need to establish new routines and networks. Perhaps I\u2019ll end up doing it somewhere else. Money isn\u2019t an issue because I\u2019ve made some shrewd business deals over the years. I\u2019ve been completely misunderstood and I\u2019m hopeful that one day the naked truth will finally come out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The self-pity is really something, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

Not a question of character<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, to the security scare that has turbo-charged the discussion about Harry\u2019s police protection. On Wednesday evening, a man in a ski mask leaped out of his car near the Sandringham estate and, screaming abuse, sprinted toward Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor while he was walking his dogs.<\/p>\n

A crowbar was later found in his car. The man got within 50 yards of Andrew and his private, unarmed bodyguard, both of whom scrambled into their vehicle and sped away as the man chased after them.<\/p>\n

The man has been named as Alex Jenkinson, 39, of Stowmarket, Suffolk. He has been charged with two counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behavior. He has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n

Fascinatingly, Andrew is going to give evidence against Jenkinson when the case comes to court, which could be in just a few weeks. This will put Andrew back in the public eye for the first time in ages.<\/p>\n

I wrote earlier this week that I think both Harry and Andrew need armed security. Many of you disagree, and there has been a fantastic and intelligent debate capturing both sides of the issue in the comments on the piece I posted Thursday. I\u2019m so incredibly proud of the brainy, witty, and smart community that has coalesced around this Substack.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sticking to my guns on this one, and not because I\u2019ve been \u201cbought\u201d by the Sussexes. Anyone who really thinks that little of me after following me for the past year, you know where the door is, hit me up for a pro-rata refund on your sub on the way out.<\/p>\n

This is not a question of Harry\u2019s character, or the appalling way he and Meghan have sought to damage and undermine the monarchy.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about something much more important: the reputation of the United Kingdom, which would be hugely damaged were something to happen to Harry on home soil.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not saying Harry should get full bells-and-whistles protection. Indeed, the current 28-day notice model, where he must give 28 days\u2019 advance notice before visiting the U.K., seems like a perfectly good framework, although it needs beefing up imho.<\/p>\n

My bet is that we will probably end up with some kind of hybrid model like this.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, everybody I spoke to at the Truth Tellers summit, Tina Brown\u2019s Sir Harry Evans Investigative Journalism Summit in London this week, seemed to think that either Harry either wouldn\u2019t get any new security, or else he would get an enhanced version of the 28-day arrangement.<\/p>\n

I asked Harry\u2019s office how the Andrew scare affects the Sussexes\u2019 summer plans. They say there is absolutely no chance Meghan is coming back to the United Kingdom without a comprehensive security package in place in light of this attempted attack on Andrew. I daresay William won\u2019t shed a tear at the news.<\/p>\n

Speaking of the Truth Tellers summit (I was invited because of the connection with Tina Brown, who founded the Daily Beast and hired me to cover the royals there), one of the other hot topics of conversation and speculation was the timeline on the Prince Harry v. Associated Newspapers case.<\/p>\n

The trial wrapped up in March after 10 grueling weeks, and initially the court signaled that no decision would come until around September.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m increasingly hearing that a verdict could arrive much sooner than that\u2014potentially as early as June, possibly even this month. Everything in the trial ran quicker than the projected timetable, so, watch this space.<\/p>\n

Birthday bashes<\/strong><\/p>\n

In other York family news, Beatrice and Eugenie were both out at Poppy Delevingne\u2019s 40th birthday party at the Hart pub in Marylebone on Thursday night. It was a star-studded affair: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, Lily James, Nicky Hilton Rothschild were there\u2014and the York sisters turned up with their respective husbands.<\/p>\n

Beatrice was there with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, quite obviously pushing back against the rumors that there are difficulties in the marriage. Eugenie, who is pregnant with her third child, was there with Jack Brooksbank. Interesting to see them both out at a big, high-profile event where they knew the cameras would be outside. Make of that what you will.<\/p>\n

And finally, Meghan. Because what would a week in royal news be without Meghan?<\/p>\n

On Archie\u2019s seventh birthday this week, Meghan posted a previously unseen photograph on Instagram of Harry with baby Archie on his chest, along with a snap of Archie and Lilibet holding hands on a beach. \u201c7 years later\u2026 happy birthday to our sweet boy,\u201d she captioned it.<\/p>\n

Lovely stuff. Except that\u2014and I find the timing impossible to ignore\u2014the birthday post landed at the same moment as an email blast promoting her As Ever \u201cSignature Candle No. 506,\u201d a $64 candle allegedly inspired by \u201cPrince Archie\u2019s\u201d birthdate of May 6, with notes of ginger, neroli, and cashmere, apparently a nod to his red hair. There\u2019s a matching one for Lilibet, \u201cSignature Candle No. 604,\u201d pegged to her June 4 birthday. Both use the children\u2019s full royal titles in the marketing materials.<\/p>\n
