It\u2019s been over 40 years since The Goonies<\/a> hit theaters, but Sean Astin<\/strong><\/a> shows no signs of slowing down. Known for his performances as Mikey in The Goonies and Sam in The Lord of the Rings<\/a>, the beloved actor is back for a new Scrooge-inspired project.<\/p>\n The upcoming indie film, Scruggs, is a reimagining of Charles Dickens<\/strong>\u2019 novel A Christmas Carol<\/a>. It will take a bold and modern-day approach to the story, following a real estate mogul, Edward Scruggs. According to the producers, it will be \u201ca magical journey with three larger-than-life spirits on Christmas<\/a> Eve.\u201d<\/p>\n Astin will star in Scruggs opposite Calvin Kassab<\/strong> in the titular role.<\/p>\n Sam Logan Khaleghi<\/strong> will produce Scruggs, while Zachary Ruda<\/strong> will direct it. According to Deadline<\/a>, production recently wrapped in Detroit, Michigan, and is set to release during the 2026 film festival season.<\/p>\n \u201cI am thrilled and elated to have the absolute honor of such an amazing cast,\u201d Khaleghi told Deadline. \u201cWe have a diverse corps of talent that delivers both comedy and drama perfectly in our gritty contemporary take that still maintains the traditions and customs of the original literature.\u201d<\/p>\n Donnell Clayton<\/strong> and Andrew-Dawe Collins<\/strong> will also appear in Scruggs, alongside Sarah Catherine Moore<\/strong> in her debut film. Scruggs will be released with Kassab Pictures in association with SLK Media Group.<\/p>\n \u201cWe live in a world that needs more empathy,\u201d Kassab said to Deadline. \u201cThe Scrooge archetype is about compassion through shared human moments.\u201d<\/p>\n This is Astin’s first starring role since being elected president of SAG-AFTRA<\/a>, the outlet notes.<\/p>\n He will be furthering the union\u2019s goals of protecting the rights of performers during \u201cthe A.I.<\/a> age,\u201d and has joined SAG-AFTRA\u2019s Government and Policy Committee, \u201cwhich has enabled him to deliver congressional testimony advocating for legislative guardrails around digital replica use,\u201d according to the guild.
