Dua Lipa has sued Samsung for $15 million after the electronics company put the singer on television boxes without permission. Lipa\u2019s legal team filed the lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Friday in a California district court according to a complaint obtained by Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cMs. Lipa brings this action against Samsung for copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of her right of publicity in order to obtain redress for the massive, continuing, unauthorized commercial exploitation of her valuable image and likeness by Samsung on cardboard television boxes,\u201d the lawsuit states.<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n While Lipa has \u201ccollaborated with Porsche, Apple, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., and many other high luxury and fashion houses,\u201d the singer never agreed to a promotional deal with Samsung. However, a photo of the singer appears on boxes for televisions featuring Samsung TV Plus, where Lipa is used to promote the Xite Hits channel:<\/p>\n \u201cRecognizing Ms. Lipa\u2019s notoriety and goodwill, Samsung used a copyrighted image of Ms. Lipa (the \u201cDL Image\u201d) without authority or license and prominently featured it on the front of cardboard boxes containing Samsung manufactured televisions for retail sale,\u201d the lawsuit claims.<\/p>\n The image itself, which Lipa \u201cholds highly valuable commercial publicity rights and trademark rights\u201d of, was taken of the singer backstage prior to her performance at the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival.<\/p>\n The lawsuit says that Lipa became aware of her appearance on the Samsung boxes in June 2025. Soon after, fans began commenting about the \u201cDua Lipa TV Box\u201d on social media. \u201cAnother fan commented that they would \u2018get that tv just because Dua is on it.\u2019 Yet another aptly noted, \u2018if you need anything selling just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it,\u2019\u201d the lawsuit says.<\/p>\n \u201cSamsung mass-manufactured, distributed (or caused to be distributed) marketed, and sold in interstate commerce across the United States a vast number of its televisions in various sizes in these cardboard boxes containing the DL Image. Samsung\u2019s copying and distribution of the DL Image constitutes willful copyright and trademark infringement, and a violation of Ms. Lipa\u2019s right of publicity, designed to improperly capitalize on Ms. Lipa\u2019s hard-earned success to promote and sell Samsung\u2019s products.\u201d<\/p>\n Lipa\u2019s legal team added that Samsung was \u201cdismissive and callous\u201d toward the singer\u2019s \u201crepeated demands that it cease and desist from infringing on her rights.\u201d \u201cSamsung\u2019s arrogance in refusing to stop its infringement confirms its conscious disregard of Ms. Lipa\u2019s intellectual property and personal identity rights, intent on monetizing its products for its own benefit by capitalizing on the implied (false) association with Ms. Lipa as a sponsor of Samsung\u2019s mass-marketed television sets in the boxes on which she is prominently featured,\u201d the lawsuit says.<\/p>\n The complaint is seeking damages \u201cno less than $15 million\u201d for the \u201ccopyright infringement, trademark infringement and misappropriation of Plaintiff\u2019s likeness and image.\u201d<\/p>\n Best of Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for RollingStone’s Newsletter<\/a>.
