MIAMI \u2014 Two police officers in Florida are suing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for defamation over their portrayal in a recent Netflix movie.<\/p>\n

Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana, two deputies in the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office, are suing the actors\u2019 production company, Artists Equity, over characters in the Netflix movie \u201cThe Rip,\u201d<\/a><\/span> according to Entertainment Weekly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rip\u201d follows two Miami-Dade police officers who uncover millions of dollars of cash and corruption in the police department. The film was billed as being inspired by real-life events.<\/p>\n

Smith and Santana, the two officers involved in the real-life case which inspired the film, claim that the film characters are heavily associated with them.<\/p>\n

They allege this has caused \u201csubstantial harm to their personal and professional reputations\u201d and that advertisements for the film \u201cimply misconduct, poor judgment, and unethical behavior,\u201d according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n

According to the lawsuit, friends and family have accused the officers of using seized money for personal gain after seeing the film. Attorneys for the officers argue \u201cthat viewers are associating the Miami-Dade Police Department and Plaintiffs with the corrupt portrayals in \u2018The Rip.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you rip something, you\u2019re stealing something. We never stole a dollar,\u201d Santana told 7News Miami.<\/p>\n
