Sally Field<\/strong> owes her career to Jack Nicholson<\/strong>, apparently.<\/p>\n In a new interview with People<\/em><\/a>, the Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em> star opened up about the time in Hollywood when she \u201ccouldn\u2019t get in a room to audition,\u201d because she had become so typecast following her three-season stint in The Flying Nun<\/em> between 1967 and 1970.<\/p>\n \u201cI couldn\u2019t get on the list,\u201d Field explained to the publication. \u201cThey thought they already knew what I was. \u2018No, thanks. We don\u2019t want any of that.’\u201d<\/p>\n Sally Field couldn\u2019t get auditions after \u2018The Flying Nun.\u2019 By: Lumeimages \/ MEGA<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Despite finding the industry \u201crotten\u201d and \u201cunfair,\u201d the actress wanted to take back control over her own life and career.<\/p>\n \u201cI had to say to myself that if I wasn\u2019t where I wanted to be, I had to get better,\u201d she explained, adding that \u201cit had to be that it was on me to make it different. I felt if I wasn\u2019t doing that, then I was just handing them all the power.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s when she decided to study at the legendary Actors Studio in Los Angeles, practicing new acting techniques \u201cconstantly, as much as I possibly could.\u201d<\/p>\n She recalled, \u201cI said to myself, \u2018It will change when I\u2019m good enough.\u2019 And ultimately, in a weird way, it happened because I was acting at the studio so much.\u201d<\/p>\n At the time, plenty of big stars frequented the acting school, including Nicholson. The Something\u2019s Gotta Give<\/em> actor ended up referring her to a casting director and a film director as \u201can undiscovered talent,\u201d a recommendation which ultimately led to her starring in 1976\u2019s Stay Hungry<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cSo in some weird way, my theory was right,\u201d Field added. \u201cI worked at the Actors Studio for so long \u2014 and it was so hard \u2014 that Jack had seen it and the word spread.\u201d<\/p>\n Jack Nicholson changed the course of Sally Field\u2019s career. I still have my head down, and I\u2019m always hoping to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n She also echoed that sentiment in a recent interview on the<\/a> Today <\/em><\/a>show<\/a>, when she was asked if she thinks about her legacy.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, I don\u2019t,\u201d she said confidently. \u201cI don\u2019t even think about it. I really think about what\u2019s next, and will there be a next? As you get older and, boy, they\u2019re hard to find. People don\u2019t think older women are interesting, I guess, but I got news for ya! It\u2019s all those older women who raised you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>
