took her own life <\/a>Feb. 23 at age 42. Her family confirmed her death, noting in a statement at the time that her family was \u201cdevastated by this loss\u201d and that she \u201cwas beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.\u201d<\/p>\nIn his conversation with CBS correspondent Tracy Smith, Short reflected on how his experiences with grief early in life informed his stage presence and confidence. \u201cWhat had developed in me was this muscle of survival and handling grief, and perspective on it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He added later about the loss in his life: \u201cIf you\u2019ve gone through that, an audience not liking you is really not that important anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
Short lost his daughter nearly 16 years after ovarian cancer took his wife of 30 years, Nancy Dolman. Though those deaths have been nightmarish, the actor told Smith that he has found \u201cunderstanding\u201d in those losses.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe understanding that mental health and cancer \u2014 like my [wife\u2019s] \u2014 are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they\u2019re terminal,\u201d he said. \u201cMy daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also recalled his daughter\u2019s final words to him: \u201cDad, let me go.\u201d<\/p>\n
Short also told Smith that his two young grandsons are why he has continued his career, spreading joy and comedy amid grief. He explained: \u201cPeople have to do things in difficult times and the mark of the man is: \u2018Can you do it?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n
He added: \u201cYou head for the light.\u201d<\/p>\n
Martin Short pulled out from a handful of professional commitments in light of his daughter\u2019s death. He returned to the public eye last week, attending the Los Angeles premiere of his upcoming documentary \u201cMarty, Life Is Short\u201d with his sons Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36. He also hit the red carpet alongside filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan, his \u201cOnly Murders\u201d co-star Selena Gomez and Netflix Chief Executive Ted Sarandos, among others. <\/p>\n
