No 3 Savile Row in London is to become the world’s first official Beatles “fan experience” in 2027. But why did this Georgian terraced house in Mayfair become a key part of the band’s legend?<\/p>\n

Situated in Mayfair, just off London’s bustling Regent Street, Savile Row <\/strong>was once the home to the City’s tailoring business. That is, until The Beatles moved into Number 3 in the summer of 1968, establishing their Apple Corps business in the Georgian house, and adding their very own recording studio in the basement.<\/p>\n

It’s been announced that No 3 is to become the very first official Beatles “fan experience” – or museum if you’d rather. Due to open in 2027, the venue will offer seven floors of unseen material from Apple\u2019s archives, exhibitions, a special fan store and a recreation of the original studio where the band recorded in early 1969.<\/p>\n

The location is also where The Beatles performed their final ever “concert” – an impromptu lunchtime session on 30th January 1969 which was intended to form the climax to their “Get Back” project, which was to be released over a year later as Let It Be.<\/p>\n

The building at Saville Row was the location of much joy and much drama as the Fab Four negotiated the difficult task of running their own business – which at various stages encompassed recording, mastering, A&R and a record label, alongside short-lived excursions into the world of film, electronics, publishing and even a clothes shop. <\/p>\n

Now No 3 is back in the hands of The Beatles. As Ringo Starr says, “It’s like coming home.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was such a trip to get back to 3 Savile Row recently and have a look around,” says Paul McCartney. “There are so many special memories within the walls, not to mention the rooftop. The team have put together some really impressive plans and I\u2019m excited for people to see it when it\u2019s ready.”<\/p>\n

Why did The Beatles play a concert on the rooftop of 3 Saville Row?<\/h2>\n

On 30th January 1969, <\/strong>The Beatles<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>played their last ever gig. It wasn\u2019t a paid show and a lot of people that witnessed the event weren\u2019t even aware at the time that they were listening to The Beatles. They couldn\u2019t see the four famous faces – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison<\/strong> and Ringo Starr <\/strong>– and the songs they were hearing were unfamiliar and played very loudly and from a distance.<\/p>\n

This was no ordinary concert – this was the moment that The Beatles took to the roof of their Apple offices in central London to perform their last public appearance as a group. The band would officially split just over a year later and the four men would never play together again.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s such an iconic moment in the Fab Four\u2019s story – the band stop the traffic with rock \u2019n\u2019 roll – that it\u2019s been copied, parodied and referenced countless times in the last 50 years. The event forms the climax to Peter Jackson<\/strong>‘s documentary Get Back<\/strong>, which is available to watch on Disney+<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But why did the rooftop concert happen and which songs did The Beatles play?<\/p>\n

The Beatles stop touring<\/h2>\n

The Beatles officially stopped touring in 1966. The quartet had worked constantly since Beatlemania broke in the summer of 1963 – they’d travelled the world, released seven albums, had 11 UK No 1 hit singles and made two feature films. They were exhausted. Controversial tours of the Philippines and the US in 1966 had seen the band come into actual physical danger and their sub-30 minute sets were full of old material and couldn\u2019t be heard over the screaming fans anyway.<\/p>\n

So, on 29 August 1966, The Beatles performed what they considered to be their last ever live show at San Francisco\u2019s Candlestick Park. Even though the show wasn\u2019t announced as their final date, it was the end of the era. With no further activity on the horizon, people though The Beatles had split up. <\/p>\n

What the public didn\u2019t know was that The Beatles had chosen to concentrate on their recording career. Their next album was to be an adventurous sonic adventure called Sgt Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band<\/strong>, released in the summer of 1967. This LP was a huge success, selling millions and critical acclaim that was unusual for a pop album.<\/p>\n

The \u201cGet Back\u201d sessions<\/h2>\n

The Beatles worked on their Magical Mystery Tour <\/strong>film project for the rest of 1967 and spent most of 1968 recording the sprawling double \u201cWhite Album\u201d<\/strong>. During the making of this record, relations between the four became fractious (with Ringo walking off the sessions for two weeks), but the band enjoyed some of the ensemble playing on tracks like Yer Blues<\/strong> and Happiness Is A Warm Gun.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because of this, towards the end of the album sessions in October 1968, The Beatles announced their return to live performance. They were to play three live shows at The Roundhouse in December. The gigs would be filmed for television and fans could win tickets via the official fan club. But these shows were postponed.<\/p>\n
