Prince William marked the start of Mental Health Awareness Week
\nby opening a suicide prevention centre in Birmingham, calling them
\na need around the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

The Prince of Wales has opened every James\u2019 Place location, with
\ncentres in London,
\nLiverpool<\/a> and Newcastle already in existence. He said during
\nhis visit, \u201cI hope we can get more of you around the UK,
\nbecause it is in need of it sadly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

James\u2019 Place was started in 2008 by Clare Milford Haven and Nick
\nWentworth-Stanley in honour of their son, James, who died by
\nsuicide at the age of 18. Since the organisation\u2019s creation they
\nhave helped more than 5,100 men through suicidal crises with their
\ntherapeutic interventions.<\/p>\n

Prince William said, \u201cWe need to
\ntalk more about suicide, talk more about preventing it and talk
\nabout getting it [help] to young men and women earlier, so we don\u2019t
\nhave to have these centres in the very long run.\u201d<\/em><\/h5>\n

James\u2019 Place become a founding partner of the Royal Foundation\u2019s
\nNational Suicide Prevention
\nNetwork<\/a> last fall and received funding for two satellite
\nservice pilot programs in the North East and North West of England
\nfor 12 months to further expand their support.<\/p>\n

During his visit, the future king received a tour of the
\nfacilities and met with service providers and men receiving
\ntreatment. One man told reporters afterwards, \u201cIt\u2019s quite
\nremarkable meeting someone like that but also someone who is
\nlistening to every word you are saying and actually responding in
\nkind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Another man, who travelled to be a part of the discussion with
\nWilliam, said, \u201cIt was like just talking to anybody, really.
\nYou wouldn\u2019t think you were speaking to the prince, the future
\nKing. It was just speaking to another man, just having a
\nchat.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Other members of the National Suicide Prevention Network were
\nalso on hand for the discussions. These included PAPYRUS, MindOUT
\nand the National Suicide Prevention Alliance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so grateful to\u2026The Prince of Wales for opening our
\nnew James\u2019 Place centre,\u201d<\/em> said James\u2019 Place\u2019s Chief Executive,
\nEllen O\u2019Donoghue, in a statement on their official
\nwebsite.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Prince has opened all four of our centres, which is a
\ntestament to how deeply he cares about suicide prevention\u2026 We know
\nthat the work we do saves lives, and we\u2019re here to help men in the
\nWest Midlands out of their crisis and find hope for the
\nfuture.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
