Prince William<\/a> was all smiles today as he stepped out at Windsor Castle<\/a> for an engagement this morning. The Prince of Wales, 43, spent time at the castle on Tuesday to meet with M\u0101ori Queen Te Arikinui Nga wai hono i te po.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Prince William<\/a> held an audience with Her Majesty, marking the first time they have ever met. M\u0101ori Queen Te Arikinui Nga wai hono i te po took her title 19 months ago, following the death of her father in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kensington Palace<\/a> posted a photograph of Prince William with the M\u0101ori monarch, alongside the caption: \u201cA pleasure to meet with M\u0101ori Queen Te Arikinui Nga wai hono i te po today at Windsor Castle.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ng\u0101 Wai hono i te p\u014d was crowned as the eighth M\u0101ori monarch in New Zealand in September 2024 at the age of just 27.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She was crowned following the death of her 69-year-old father, Kiingi Tuheitia P\u014dtatau Te Wherowhero VII. He had just marked 18 years since his coronation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As reported by the BBC<\/a> at the time, Ng\u0101 Wai hono i te p\u014d was chosen as kuini – the M\u0101ori word for queen – by a council of New Zealand’s indigenous M\u0101ori chiefs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She is the second M\u0101ori queen, with the first having been her grandmother Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The M\u0101ori monarchy dates back to the 19th Century and is mainly a ceremonial role.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This type of monarchy began when different M\u0101ori tribes wanted to create a unifying figure, who would act in a similar way to a European monarch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The aim was to prevent the widespread loss of land to New Zealand’s British colonisers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was also intended to help preserve M\u0101ori culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
