\n\tLondon-based sales and impact outfit Together Films<\/a> has picked up international rights to the Swedish love drama \u201cLisa & Lilly,\u201d produced by Fifth Season<\/a>\u2019s Scandi production powerhouse Nordic Drama Queens<\/a>.<\/p>\n The project, due to start lensing in August, marks the feature length debut of helmer Julia Lindstr\u00f6m<\/a>, credited for Netflix\u2019 \u201cYoung Royals<\/a>\u201d Season 3, \u201cThe New Force\u201d and the 2020 G\u00f6teborg Festival best short film \u201cDaddy\u2019s Girl.\u201d \u00a0Top crew attached include Norwegian cinematographer Cecilie Semec (Dag Johan Haugerud trilogy \u201cSex-Dreams-Love\u201d) and Estonian production designer Jaagup Roomet (\u201cNever Alone,\u201d \u201cThe Invisible Fight\u201d).<\/p>\n \n\tHeading the cast, to be officially announced May 13\u00a0 in Cannes, are Bianca Delbravo, the revelation of the 2023 Venice Horizon multiple winner \u201cParadise is Burning,\u201d newcomer Lina Betn\u00e9r, as well as Norwegian star Ane Dahl Torp (\u201cThe Ugly Stepsister,\u201d \u201cCharter\u201d) in a supporting role. |<\/p>\n \n\tBilled as a \u2018Romeo and Juliet for our time\u2019, the feature is penned by seasoned writer Veronica Zacco (\u201cThe Bridge,\u201d \u201cTop Dog,\u201d \u201cBurn All My Letters\u201d) in collaboration with Palme d\u2019Or nominee Julia Thelin (\u201cPush It\u201d), from Mian Lodalen\u2019s acclaimed novel \u201cLisa & Lilly: A True Story.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tInspired by real events, the story is set in 1910s Stockholm. During one summer night, \u201ctwo young women sneak out to a forbidden dance, where a single kiss ignites a love that will change everything,\u201d reads the logline.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWhen author Mian Lodalen sent me the book before it was released [in 2020], and after reading it, I instantly knew this was a\u00a0film\u00a0I had to make,\u201d Nordic Drama Queens co-founder and producer Josefine Tengblad<\/a> told Variety.<\/em> <\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThe story of Lisa and Lilly affects us strongly as the story about Romeo and Juliet, only this time, it is based on real people and events,\u201d she underscored, before adding: \u201cUntil this day, the majority of LGBTQ+ films that are made are told from the perspective of gay men, ignoring the women who have played a large part in changing our history,\u201d she added. \u201cSince my first movie \u2018Kiss Me,\u2019 partly based on my\u00a0own\u00a0life, I have been seeking for the right project with an\u00a0LGBTQ+\u00a0angle and this story has everything and more. The film about Lisa and Lilly will be as relevant tomorrow as it will be in 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tLindstr\u00f6m added. \u201cIt\u2019s an important and beautiful love story about the right to love, whoever you want. About love in life and death.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tRegarding the key cast, the helmer said: \u201cThe first time we brought together Lina [Betn\u00e9r] and Bianca (Delbravo] together, there was pure magic in the room. Their chemistry and unique talent completely blew me away. Beyond that,\u201d she added, \u201cI\u2019m incredibly excited to work with Ane Dahl Torp who, ever since my time at the Norwegian Film School, has been a personal favorite of mine. She moves me deeply in every role she takes on, and early in the process, she became our first choice for the part of Lisa\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tTogether Films\u2019 CEO Sarah Mosses, who came on board at an early stage, told Variety:<\/em> \u201c\u2019Lisa & Lilly\u2019 is exactly the kind of film we exist to bring to the world. It\u2019s a true story; two young women in 1910s Stockholm who chose love when their love was considered a crime, and paid the ultimate price. Director Julia Lindstr\u00f6m has found a way to make this feel viscerally present: the visual language is bold, intimate, and contemporary. Think the emotional heat of \u2018Euphoria\u2019 alongside the period beauty of \u2018Portrait of a Lady on Fire!’\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cAt a moment when homophobia is rising globally and the rights so many of us take for granted are being openly challenged, this film is a reminder of what\u2019s at stake: that young love, in all its intensity and vulnerability, should be equal for everyone.
