The latest Punisher special is easily the most violence you\u2019ll see on Disney\u2019s streaming service. Type \u201cP\u201d into the search bar of Disney+ and you\u2019ll see results for The Punisher: One Last Kill<\/em><\/a> right next to Peter Pan<\/em> and The Princess and the Frog<\/em>, despite the fact that the Marvel<\/a> film stars Jon Bernthal<\/a> as a vigilante who isn\u2019t afraid to dole out deadly justice on the streets of New York City.<\/p>\n

In one scene, Bernthal stabs a muscly thug in the neck with a pen until he spurts blood all over his face. In another, a man kidnaps a dog just to immediately toss the animal in the direction of a trash truck driving down the street. Though we don\u2019t see the accident on screen, the dog\u2019s squeal certainly makes it hard not to imagine the poor little guy being crushed by tires ten times his size. So, when Esquire asked Bernthal about the scene in our latest digital cover story<\/a>, he admitted that he couldn\u2019t believe Disney allowed it either.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen man, I couldn\u2019t believe the dog gets killed,\u201d Bernthal said, even though he co-wrote the Punisher special. \u201c[That] they let me do it? It\u2019s crazy. Crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, if anyone knows what Punisher fans are after, it\u2019s Bernthal. According to the actor, it felt like Marvel didn\u2019t exactly know what to do with the character until he stepped in. \u201cEvery iteration over the last few years, they were like, \u2018What if we found him and he\u2019s now teaching English?\u2019\u201d Bernthal said. \u201cThese were literally things that they were pitching. \u2018What if he\u2019s a chess grand master now?\u2019 I was like, \u2018Look, dude, the one thing I\u2019m not going to do with fans is take a giant jump.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Bernthal took the character down an even darker route by turning his penchant for violence into a character study about military PTSD and suicide. He wasn\u2019t afraid that it might scare the suits over at Disney.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think that this is the level of psychological complexity and just blunt violence that the fans really want for this character,\u201d he said, even if The Punisher<\/em>\u2019s dog-murdering thug lives right next to search results for Puppy Dog Pals and Air Bud. <\/em><\/p>\n
