{"id":2415317,"date":"2026-05-13T17:54:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T17:54:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2415317"},"modified":"2026-05-13T17:54:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T17:54:23","slug":"new-bronx-high-school-of-hip-hop-will-use-music-as-vehicle-for-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/new-bronx-high-school-of-hip-hop-will-use-music-as-vehicle-for-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"New Bronx High School of Hip Hop will use music as &#8216;vehicle for learning&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A new public high school in the Bronx will be turning every lesson into music class this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The Bronx School of Hip Hop is set to open its doors in Claremont in September as the first-of-its-kind city public school that uses the genre music famously pioneered in the borough as a \u201cvehicle for learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a rigorous, future-ready New York City public school that is innovative and responsive to the community\u2019s needs and really exposes our students to different pathways to really show their intelligence,\u201d said incoming principal Jason Reyes. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jason Reyes will serve as the inaugural principal at the Bronx High School of Hip Hop. <span class=\"credit\">DOE<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While its name might conjure up a different idea, Bronx School of Hip Hop won\u2019t be going to rap class in the morning before heading to a DJ session.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, educators will teach the standard state curriculum through the lens of five core elements of hip hop culture.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cM-ing, DJing, Graffiti, Breaking, and Knowledge of Self \u2014 these connect directly to literacy, mathematics, science, technology, entrepreneurship, media and then cultural leadership. It\u2019s not like we have these music electives. It\u2019s more like hip hop is embedded through the academic program as a rigorous framework,\u201d explained Reyes, a born-and-raised Bronxite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo MCing is still the English language. We\u2019re talking about the analysis of rhetorical language, storytelling, literary analysis,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Reyes, a born-and-raised Bronxite, said hip-hop is the borough\u2019s \u201cnumber on export.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">DOE<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about how math relates specifically to DJing and production, you\u2019ve got sequencing ratios, algebraic expressions and pattern recognition within that, as well as the whole financial modeling side of math with statistics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There will still be plenty of interesting classes that a regular public school might not offer, including audio engineering, beat production, video and graphic design and more. <\/p>\n<p>The idea for the Bronx School of Hip Hop had been years in the making, with numerous longtime educators across the five boroughs recognizing the fascination students have with music.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The school will be at the merged I.S. 313 and I.S. 339 campus. <span class=\"credit\">Google Maps<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Harnessing that attraction and using it as a means of engaging with students was something Reyes had done throughout his career, calling hip hop in particular \u201cpowerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s culturally relevant, students already are into the music and the culture of it. It provides an entry point for both teachers and students to meet and really create that engagement,\u201d said Reyes, who pointed to Nas as an artist he has looked up to since he was a student himself.<\/p>\n<p>Creating the first-of-its-kind school in the Bronx was a no-brainer, Reyes continued, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/education\/2026\/05\/05\/the-bronx-school-of-hip-hop--a-new-public-high-school--to-open-this-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling hip hop the<\/a> \u201cnumber one export out of the Bronx.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That notoriety and neighborhood connection could also mean that plenty of big-name musicians might be visiting the unique institution in its inaugural year, Reyes teased.<\/p>\n<p>The Bronx School of Hip Hop will open its doors to its first-ever freshmen class this September in the same building as the merged I.S. 313 and I.S. 339.<\/p>\n<p>New York students can apply to the Bronx School of Hip Hop as they would any other public school in the five boroughs \u2014 there is no zoning protocol or admissions test.<\/p>\n<p>The approximately 120 freshman students will be the only ones in the school for the first academic school year, according to Reyes \u2014 they will also be the first sophomore, junior and senior classes as time goes on, as well as the first-ever graduating class.<\/p>\n<p>That \u201cfounding class\u201d will be integral in crafting the identity and personality of the brand-new institution, Reyes said, adding that he looks forward to having student-made beats ring through the halls for the change of class rather than a boring bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are the lifeblood of our schools and we definitely honor them,\u201d said Reyes.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em> \u2018 The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u2018 Some details of this article were extracted from the following source celebrity.land \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new public high school in the Bronx will be turning every lesson into music class this fall.
