Country music has been such a huge part of my life. And I feel like it\u2019s always scary when you start making music that kind of bleeds into a genre. She grew up on a mix of country and pop, including Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, but also soaked in music from Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley that her father played around the house. Lefty dabbled in songwriting for most of her life but pursued studies in public health at Tulane University. She began posting music on TikTok, but says, \u201cI had no plan of doing anything in music. I always loved to sing and I was always writing, but I didn\u2019t know anybody that did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter graduating in 2024, she began writing and releasing music in earnest, including 2025\u2019s \u201cCynic\u201d and \u201cGrace.\u201d Since signing with Atlantic Outpost earlier this year, she\u2019s been piling up impactful releases. In January, she rolled out \u201cThinking \u2018Bout You\u201d and \u201cSlow Dancin\u2019.\u201d During a Nashville songwriting trip a few months ago, she quickly sat down at a piano and wrote a snippet of a song to share on social media. That snippet, which subtly interpolated the melody of Noah Kahan\u2019s \u201cStick Season,\u201d was the basis for \u201cBoston\u201d and quickly went viral. (\u201cStick Season\u201d writer Kahan is credited on \u201cBoston\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was just for fun and I wasn\u2019t thinking anything about it,\u201d Lefty says. \u201cSo when people started to like it, I was like, \u2018Oh, shoot, I need to finish this.\u2019 I wasn\u2019t thinking about anything so intensely, and that was honestly the most fun part. Building around something that kind of already existed was cool and I\u2019d never done anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLefty followed \u201cBoston\u201d with the banjo-laced \u201cI Know I Know,\u201d which depicts the complexities of trying to move on from a relationship, while acknowledging those fragile intentions on lines such as \u201cone glass of wine and you\u2019re on my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI feel like all of my friends, this is the thing we always talk about,\u201d Lefty says. \u201cYou go out and you want to have this night out with your friends, then all of a sudden you start drinking and you start thinking about that one person that haunts you. So, we wrote about it, but in a really lighthearted, fun way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs her career picked up steam, the seeds were planted for her six-song EP, <em>Is This Heaven?,<\/em> out Friday (May 15).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI just want good writing and super fun and just honest songs,\u201d she says of the EP, which includes \u201cBoston,\u201d \u201cThinking \u2018Bout You\u201d and \u201cI Know I Know,\u201d as well as a collaboration with Vincent Mason on \u201cSomething To Lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m obsessed with this song. It\u2019s one of my favorites that I\u2019ve ever written, and obviously, [he] and I started dating a few months ago,\u201d she says. \u201cI wrote it about being in this place of not wanting to be in a relationship, and then all of a sudden this person comes along and you just have no choice. That\u2019s totally how I felt about him. When we sang it, it just felt so natural and fun. I was like, \u2018If I\u2019m going to have any features or collaborate with anybody, it has to be him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLefty\u2019s real name is Stella Lefkofsky, but she\u2019s been known by Stella Lefty her whole life. \u201cMy uncle, my Dad, my brothers, have gone by Lefty\u2026 so it was the easiest thing and I didn\u2019t have to change anything,\u201d she says. Lefty says her family, including her father, Groupon co-founder and Tempus AI founder\/CEO Eric Lefkofsky, has been a bedrock of support and a model of work ethic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy whole family is super hardworking. I think the biggest takeaway is there\u2019s a grit that I feel, like \u2018Keep your head down and just keep going\u2026\u2019 I\u2019ve been working as hard as possible and learned that from them. They were super emotionally supportive. They definitely pushed me in that regard and I\u2019m grateful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe\u2019ll take her music on the road this year, opening tours for Myles Smith and Tucker Wetmore. She\u2019ll also make her Lollapalooza debut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI just want to keep playing shows and meeting people, because it\u2019s crazy to see the number on your screen, like, \u2018This is how many people are listening.\u2019 But it\u2019s a whole other experience to meet those people and see the people that love the song. So that\u2019s what I\u2019m most looking forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe also dreams of more collabs. \u201cI\u2019m obsessed with Ella Langley, she\u2019s amazing, so anything with Ella would obviously be a dream. I\u2019m also obsessed with Gracie Abrams, I\u2019m so inspired by her. And I think if Tim McGraw asked me to do something with him, I would die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat duality of unrestrained love for both the country and pop spaces threads through her own music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been super particular about wanting to live in both spaces as best as I can,\u201d Lefty says. \u201cEvery time we\u2019ve been talking about doing something, it\u2019s like, \u2018Maybe it would be helpful for the audience if they really understood what lane you wanted to be in,\u2019 and I\u2019m always like, \u2018No, I will not pick a lane.\u2019 I won\u2019t, because it wouldn\u2019t be authentic for me. Music now is so genre-bendy and so fluid.
