On Saturday, May 23, Northwoods Music Collaborative<\/strong> and ThirdTone collaborate on a sound experience titled \u201cLive Binaural Journey\u201d at the Black Box Theater at Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center in Burlington. The organizations will combine low frequencies and live instruments to create an immersive sonic field.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a live binaural field where sound is generated inside your perceptions,\u201d ThirdTone cofounder, composer and conductor Evan Premo<\/a><\/strong> said in a press release. (Premo previously served as codirector of Marshfield chamber ensemble Scrag Mountain Music<\/a><\/strong>.) \u201cAs the frequencies interact, listeners begin to generate new layers of sound internally, reshaping their sense of space and time.\u201d<\/p>\n Did you follow all that? Put simply, a combination of ambient noise, pulsing tones and live instruments will help guide audience members\u2019 brains into a relaxed, meditative state. What makes it different than, say, a sound bath is that \u201cLive Binaural Journey\u201d is meant to produce tones from within<\/em> the listeners themselves, creating what Premo calls a \u201cdynamic interplay between external sound and internal perception.\u201d<\/p>\n And if you\u2019re wondering what the hell \u201cbinaural\u201d means (other than a mid-career Pearl Jam<\/strong> LP), it\u2019s recording sound to mimic the way human ears hear. When different frequencies are played in each ear, it creates a so-called binaural beat \u2014 a ghost beat \u2014 entirely inside a listener\u2019s head.<\/p>\n The event also serves as a release party for the new app from ThirdTone, which uses binaural frequencies to create internal tones that the founders describe as \u201csupporting brain-body synchronization.\u201d The app purports to engage the nervous system in an effort to help regulate the body and even improve sleep quality.<\/p>\n \u201cSound moves in the ears and is processed through the whole body,\u201d cofounder, author and sound therapist Lisa Mase<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>points out in a press release. \u201cThirdTone creates conditions where people can feel that interaction directly and allow the body to respond. This sound experience is taking ancient traditions of vibrational healing into new forms.\u201d<\/p>\n
