These days, it seems like you can\u2019t go to a concert without phones being held up at any time.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It makes sense that we\u2019d want to capture a moment that we\u2019re excited about, likely paid a pretty penny for and can post on our social media feeds for all our friends to see.<\/p>\n
But Florence Welch of famed English band Florence and the Machine wants you to rethink that.<\/p>\n
\u201cFilming this song will stop you from experiencing this song,\u201d she said before singing the last chorus of \u201cDog Days Are Over,\u201d one of the final tunes of the Tuesday night show at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. \u201cAnd isn\u2019t that why you came?\u201d<\/p>\n
As she started singing again, the arena was lit up and the crowd was visible \u2014 well, as visible as it could be when you have tears in your eyes. Witnessing an arena full of people jumping, clapping, dancing and singing to a beloved song without countless phones in sight makes you feel a sense of joy and liveliness so special and cathartic in our smartphone-addicted world.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But even before Welch\u2019s request to ditch the phones (or as she called it, \u201cperform a small ritual together\u201d), they were a rare sight last night. Most of her fans seemed more interested in engaging with the group\u2019s music \u2014 even the ones who were close enough to get shots without zooming in \u2014 and they had good reason to be paying attention.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Welch and the Machine, and a quartet of dancers and backup singers called the Witch Choir, performed a show with nothing to hide behind; no pyro, confetti, outfit changes or an elaborate stage to distract or dazzle. Welch made her intentions clear at the beginning of the show.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever you have been through, whatever you are going through, know that I\u2019m with you, and I hope we can provide you with a place to scream,\u201d she said, referring to the name of the tour, named after the band\u2019s latest album, \u201cEverybody Scream.\u201d And the Seattle crowd was up to the task.<\/p>\n
After pausing the show briefly to fix a wardrobe malfunction that could have caused her to trip (something she feared doing as she\u2019s\u00a0broken her foot performing before), Welch admitted, \u201cIt\u2019s been a long tour.\u201d She said the crowd\u2019s rousing participation in \u201cWhich Witch\u201d \u201cbrought her back to life\u201d and that Seattle\u2019s jumping was maybe the best she\u2019s seen on the tour.<\/p>\n
Welch jumped right along with the crowd, and skipped, twirled and ran, all without missing a note. Her vocals came off as effortless, often soaring through the arena with her signature operatic vibrato. And the Witch Choir was right there with her. Aptly named, it was easy to imagine they were a coven as they convulsed, crawled and sang haunting backup vocals.<\/p>\n
The whole show seems to bring the tour\u2019s namesake song to life. In \u201cEverybody Scream,\u201d Welch tells listeners to \u201cdance,\u201d\u00a0\u201csing,\u201d \u201cmove,\u201d \u201cscream\u201d and, of course, \u201cput down (their screens).\u201d The song also details her complicated relationship with performing \u2014 but fans can be glad she keeps coming back to it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
After all, \u201cThe thing about songwriting is it doesn\u2019t really make sense when you\u2019re writing it,\u201d Welch explained to the crowd. \u201cBut it all makes sense when I see you singing it back to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
