The Princess of Wales received a rock star welcome to Reggio
\nEmilia, Italy, on Wednesday, marking her
\nfirst overseas visit since completing cancer treatment.<\/a><\/p>\n

Catherine
\narrived in the Northern Italian city as hundreds of citizens
\nflocked to the piazza outside the town hall for the chance to see
\nthe future queen. Catherine\u2019s visit is on behalf of the Royal
\nFoundation Centre for Early Childhood for a \u201cfact-finding
\nmission to explore leading international approaches to supporting
\nyoung children those who care for them,\u201d<\/em> according to
\nKensington Palace officials.<\/h6>\n

Catherine delighted the crowd as she spoke Italian to them, and
\ncould be overheard introducing herself to children, asking them,
\n\u201cCome ti chiami? Io sono Caterina.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

At the Town Hall building, Catherine met with Mayor Marco
\nMassari, Prefect Salvatore Angieri, and three women who helped
\ndevelop the world-famous Reggio Emilia approach.<\/p>\n

The Reggio Emilia approach places \u201crelationships,
\nenvironment and community at the centre of a child\u2019s
\ndevelopment,\u201d<\/em> according to Kensington Palace, and creates
\n\u201cnurturing, creative and responsive learning
\nenvironments.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Catherine participated in a discussion on how the city\u2019s
\nofficials created the Reggio Emilia approach, discussing how the
\nhistory, culture and education of the area led to its
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n

At the end of her visit, she received the Primo Tricolore in
\nrecognition of her work surrounding the early years. She told Mayor
\nMassari, \u201cWow, what an honour. I\u2019m very grateful, it\u2019s very
\ngratefully accepted.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The future queen visited the Centro Internazionale Loris
\nMalaguzzi to learn from educators about the Reggio Emilia approach.
\nCatherine learned more about its core concepts and participated in
\na clay-sculpting session as part of a practical demonstration on
\nthe work of ateliers and atelieristas, fine-arts educators who
\nteach children to express themselves and learn about the world
\nthrough art and creative play.<\/p>\n

On their Facebook page<\/a>, the
\nCentro shared how Catherine\u2019s visit as \u201ca day that will stand
\n[as] one of the most remarkable in [our] history.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a genuine honour to welcome Her Royal Highness in
\nsuch a warm and welcoming atmosphere.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Catherine\u2019s final engagement of the day was a visit to the
\nScuola Comunale d\u2019Infanzia Anna Frank pre-school to see children
\nbeing taught with the Reggio Emilia approach. Kensington Palace
\nshared that the Scuola focuses on creativity, relationships and the
\nlearning environment.<\/p>\n

The royal joined in classroom sessions, talking to the children
\nabout her late dog Lupo, and sharing that she taught Prince George,
\nPrincess Charlotte, and Prince Louis sensory and creative
\nactivities during the COVID-19 lockdowns to engage them.<\/p>\n

According to The
\nTelegraph<\/em><\/a>, while participating in an arts activity,
\nCatherine said, \u201cThe world children are growing up in is so
\nfast-paced and actually encouraging them to slow down and really
\nengage in these creative activities.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so important to explore language in the way that
\nyou\u2019re doing, creatively, in a really expressive way through
\nstorytelling. It really connects to them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Catherine also met with parents and educators to discuss the
\nReggio Emilia approach and toured the school to meet with its staff
\nbefore departing. Her visit continues on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\nfuture queen\u2019s first day, captioning them in English and Italian:
