Yet the Italian native has operated mostly outside filmmaking circles \u2014 until now. Coming off of his feature directorial debut from 2023,\u00a0<em>The Absence of Eden<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 which starred his wife, Oscar winner\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/zoe-saldana-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_zoe-saldana-2_1\" data-tag=\"zoe-saldana-2\">Zoe Salda\u00f1a<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Perego launched the production company Leaf Entertainment alongside\u00a0Michael Cerenzie. The goal was simple: Work with the best, most decorated global auteurs and help them get their next projects made. Easier said than done, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPerhaps, but Perego has hit a remarkable benchmark in a very short period of time. At this year\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/cannes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cannes_1\" data-tag=\"cannes\">Cannes<\/a> Film Festival, he will make history as the first producer to have three movies in the main competition \u2014 and they\u2019re among the most pedigreed and anticipated:\u00a0<em>Minotaur<\/em>, the first film in nine years from Russia\u2019s\u00a0Andrey Zvyagintsev\u00a0(<em>Leviathan, Loveless<\/em>);\u00a0<em>Fjord<\/em>, the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sebastian-stan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sebastian-stan_1\" data-tag=\"sebastian-stan\">Sebastian Stan<\/a>-led drama from Romanian master\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/cristian-mungiu\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cristian-mungiu_1\" data-tag=\"cristian-mungiu\">Cristian Mungiu<\/a>\u00a0(<em>4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days<\/em>); and\u00a0<em>Paper Tiger<\/em>, the starry latest from Croisette regular\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/james-gray\/\" id=\"auto-tag_james-gray_1\" data-tag=\"james-gray\">James Gray<\/a>\u00a0toplined by\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/scarlett-johansson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_scarlett-johansson_1\" data-tag=\"scarlett-johansson\">Scarlett Johansson<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/adam-driver\/\" id=\"auto-tag_adam-driver_1\" data-tag=\"adam-driver\">Adam Driver<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/miles-teller\/\" id=\"auto-tag_miles-teller_1\" data-tag=\"miles-teller\">Miles Teller<\/a>. That doesn\u2019t even cover Perego\u2019s full Cannes slate: He\u2019s also behind\u00a0Kantemir Balagov\u2019s\u00a0<em>Butterfly Jam<\/em>, screening in Directors\u2019 Fortnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs Perego tells\u00a0<em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, he knows he\u2019s new to the producing game and that he does things differently. He sees each highly anticipated film on his slate as part of a larger collective project: \u201cMy ultimate goal is to build this idea of a company of artists,\u201d he says. \u201cI feel very lucky to give these directors a voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>You have a background as a visual artist. Now you\u2019re a producer on three competition films in Cannes. How did that happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGrowing up in a small place in Italy, my father and my mother showed me films all the time. I was very curious \u2014 it can be a great voice for all these different places around the world, where you can talk about social commentary, or just tell a story about the human condition. The first question I asked myself was: Where is the space to support that? We set up a company called Leaf Entertainment. I asked my partner Michael [Cerenzie], \u201cWhat do you think about starting to really produce auteurs?\u201d I was very lucky to be part of this very strong community of all these great filmmakers. \u2026 There is a necessity culturally to really help and protect the voice of these great auteurs, now more than ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>It\u2019s been almost a decade since Andrey Zvyagintsev\u2019s last film, and he\u2019s been open about health issues in the intervening years. How did you get involved with him on\u00a0<em>Minotaur<\/em>?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI\u2019ve known a friend of his for a long time, and I kept telling him that anything he wants to do, I want to support it.\u00a0<em>Leviathan<\/em>\u00a0really changed something in my life: It was an incredible movie, I\u2019ve watched it so many times. And I\u2019m an artist: My job is not really like a normal producer. I don\u2019t want to come in and invade this space. I want to just say, \u201cHey, I\u2019m here. I can be an asset. Tell me how I can help you.\u201d With this movie, MK Productions and\u00a0Charles Gillibert, a great producer, were already involved. I asked, \u201cCan I Zoom with Andrey?\u201d Then I told him, \u201cI\u2019m not here to give you a note. I\u2019m here to support you.\u201d You will see, it is a very important film. I just supported him to make the best film he could.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>You mentioned the necessity of backing these auteurs right now. Is that a unique problem in the U.S. from your perspective? What was it like getting\u00a0<em>Paper Tiger<\/em>\u00a0off the ground for James Gray?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAgain, I came in last [among the producers]. You cannot understand right now how, for somebody like James, it really has been a challenge to put a movie together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1296px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((730\/1296)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">\u2018Paper Tiger.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Cannes Film Festival<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>There were some recastings as it remained in development. Did you come in after that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI read the script before that; after that, yes, I came in. I was at lunch with James and we had a call with the producers, like\u00a0Rodrigo\u00a0[Teixeira], and they said, \u201cThe movie is not happening.\u201d He had a film before that was supposed to go with Zoe, my wife, and he\u2019s really a friend. I said \u201cOK, let me think about this.\u201d Within a week we put the rest together and he went to make his film.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>How did it turn around, if it looked like it wasn\u2019t happening?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt was missing the money aspect and I helped figure out the money aspect. I supported that aspect and the movie came through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>What are some of the biggest challenges right now in getting movies like\u00a0<em>Paper Tiger<\/em>\u00a0made?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThere are so many. It\u2019s very difficult to generate a real business right now. Around the world, people go to the cinema to watch this type of film. There\u2019s more [understanding] around what it means to be an auteur, so I hope America really, really will [embrace that], too. The big challenge here is pure economic business. Are you finding that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEverything is finding the balance. The question we need to ask is not about being for or against streaming, but how we can support filmmakers on that [topic] correctly. Thinking about it, streaming will be part of the future, but the question is can we protect and continue to make this type of film that goes to cinema, that creates an experience \u2014 and after, if they need to go to streaming, they go to streaming. It\u2019s very important to have that experience. I believe in the spirit of the cinema because when I was very lonely, I spent so much time in the movie theater.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI don\u2019t think one thing takes away from the other. I just think it\u2019s important to be sure: Can we support one another? What does the filmmaker want? That\u2019s what we need to consider very carefully. It\u2019s about asking the filmmaker how you see your film, where you see your film. I\u2019m asking the question all the time: What James wants, what Andrey wants, what all these people want.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Coming off of this first round of producing, what are some of the big lessons learned for you in how to move forward?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe first big lesson is, more than ever, I believe that directors need to be speaking together. Just to understand where everything started for me here, there\u2019s this photo of all these great artists together at Mr Chow. I asked myself: Why doesn\u2019t a photo like this exist for today\u2019s auteurs? I grew up with\u00a0Coppola,\u00a0Scorsese,\u00a0Spielberg,\u00a0Lucas\u00a0\u2014 they were all together. So I created a manifesto of a creative community, why we need to do this again. My first step was, \u201cLet me see if you want some help from a complete outsider.\u201d The second part, now, is to try to put the community together and see where in the next five years film will change, and how we can support these filmmakers in that. That\u2019s really what I want to do now: Build this community.
