The phrase \u201cbe careful what you wish for\u201d has never been truer than in the new horror film Obsession<\/em><\/a>, which has an ending so dark and twisted<\/a>, you may find yourself avoiding wishing on birthday candles and shooting stars for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n Too afraid to watch the movie? Allow us to explain. (Warning: spoilers ahead.)<\/p>\n Out May 15 nationwide, the new movie from YouTuber and Milk & Serial <\/em>filmmaker Curry Barker<\/a> follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a lonely 20-something with an unreciprocated crush on his childhood friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Bear\u2019s too nervous to properly ask her out, mostly because he senses she\u2019s not exactly into him as more than a friend. So, when he drops her off at her house following a night out with friends, he\u2019s desperate enough to make a wish on a \u201cOne-Wish Willow\u201d \u2014 a gag gift he originally picked out for Nikki at an occult shop. Snapping the branch inside the box (which is how one makes the wish), Bear wishes that Nikki would love him \u201cmore than anyone in the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n The wish immediately comes true. Nikki becomes obsessed with Bear \u2014 and desperate for him to love her back. At first, Bear plays along, happy that Nikki\u2019s finally reciprocating his feelings, even as his friends Ian (Cooper Tomlinson, Barker\u2019s longtime collaborator) and Sarah (Megan Lawless) are weirded out by Nikki\u2019s sudden shift.<\/p>\n Alas, Bear quickly learns that forcing someone to love you by magical means will never, ever go well.<\/p>\n It soon becomes clear that Nikki\u2019s not exactly behaving like herself \u2014 nor, well, any normal person. She stands at the door waiting for Bear for hours, soiling herself in the process. (It\u2019s not exactly a romantic comedy, guys.) When Bear says he\u2019s interested in becoming a food critic, she makes him a sandwich to taste test\u2026out of meat from his dead cat. And that\u2019s in addition to all of the screaming, crying and terrifying tantrum-throwing when Bear dares to leave her side.<\/p>\n It eventually comes out that whoever this obsessive person is, it\u2019s not Nikki at all \u2014 rather, it\u2019s some sort of entity, created by the wish, that is possessing her. In the middle of the night, Nikki whispers to Bear that the other version of her is asleep and begs Bear to kill her to put her out of her misery.<\/p>\n Bear attempts to call the One-Wish Willow company and reverse the wish, which an operator tells him is impossible \u2026 unless, you know, Bear dies. So Bear feels very stuck in this codependent relationship.<\/p>\n So what happens in the end? Nothing good.<\/p>\n After Nikki\u2019s behavior escalates to dangerous levels (she violently murders Sarah<\/a> after seeing Bear and Sarah in a car together), Bear becomes hellbent on getting out of this tragic situation. He purchases more One-Wish Willows, but is unable to break any of them \u2014 turns out, they were really serious about the whole \u201cone wish\u201d thing. When Bear begs Ian to make a wish that will reverse Nikki\u2019s violent, undying love for him, Ian instead wishes for a billion dollars \u2026 which, proving the One-Wish Willow real, immediately rains down on them.<\/p>\nWhen obsession isn\u2019t exactly love<\/h2>\n
